RA28 Caster Wed, 06 August 2003 12:02 Go to next message
Hi all.. Just put some new tie rods on the Celica and decided while it was getting the wheel alignment to get them to add a bit of caster too it as i've been hearing its a good thing for handling.

They put 2.5 degree on one side and 2 on the other.. Due to the roads or something for it to go straight needed less in one side.

Anyhows.. Not sure, maybe just imagining it but it feels like it corners worse.

What kind of effect does the caster have on the feel of the car? I probably should have learnt more about it first, but heard from a few people that its all good.

Any ideas and all would be good!

Many thanks
Joel

more caster will give you a heavier steering and a stronger centering force on the wheel.

The reason why people put more caster on is because you get a slight change in chamber when you turn the wheel. (Have a look at the wheels on full lock.)The outside wheel should get more negative chamber which is good when your chamber goes positive due to roll.

The down side of this is it makes it a bit of a dog to drive.

As a side note, if you put larger diameter wheels on your car it will give you the same heavy steering that you get from the increased caster but without any of it's benefits.

Thanks for the reply mate. Would it make any sense that now with the extra caster you seem to have to turn the wheel more to get around a corner? Seems i'm 1/4 - 1/2 a turn more of the steering wheel through some corners than what I normally would have... Maybe its my overactive imagination Confused

Also depends on the offset of your wheels, as to whether you upset the scrub radius from stock. If you want more castor, thread the rods down a bit (!), just make sure the tyres don't hit anything. Evil or Very Mad

Pardon my ignorance, but how exactly did they adjust the caster on your car. I was under the impression that it was pretty much built in. Do you have adjustable strut tops???

No, it was done with those rods from the control arms that run to the front of the car. They are threaded at one end so they can be adjusted. I thought all early Celica's had these?

No adjustable strut tops!

Cheers

So I guess your front wheels have moved forward a little.

Too easy....I guess the difference would be around the 1/2 inch mark, probably not even noticeable to look at.

You should find it grips a little better on the tighter corners where you are getting some body roll. In a turn the caster will give you a bit of negative chamber on the outside wheel and a bit of positive chamber onthe inside wheel. Great if you have a problem with the front of the car leaning over in a turn.
