ive got a friend with an ae86 with a jdm bigport bluetop 4age
hes got a leak in his crankcase apparently and its leaking quite a bit of oil
someone said that all you need to replace is the gasket and its fixed? is this true?
someone also called it a "main rear seal" are they the same thing
has someone got a piccy of the bit in question?

Well the first thing to do is pull the motor apart and take the crank out of the block - if your talking about the inside seals
If you mean the outside seal behind the front pully, just jab a screwdriver it it and lever it out. Then get your new seal (15-25 bucks) and lube it a little with grease and push it into place keeping it sqaure to the mounting surface. A bit of tubing the same size as the seal will help to drive it into place (gently, so you don't damage it).

Rear main seal..roughly $40 for the part and 2 - 3 hours labour tops, you should have it done in the back yard with barely any tools in half a day

Dont get it from repco
Pay a bit more and get one from toyota or ACL, The One i got from repco felt a bit soft (mabey manufacturing fault ???) but needless to say it only lasted 500 K's (race K's that is) and had completely worn out and had to be replaced about a month ago, But as Michael said not to hard to do if your confident.
Just remember to thoroughly clean the crank and dont scratch the crank getting the old one out.

also the engine has done 200 000 kms
is there anything we should do at the same time?
is it liable to break in any specific spot soon?
