Thermofan question

old thermo fan switch died.. so i bought a new repco one.. i wire it up and the fan is either full on all the time regardless of temp or not on at all.
now.. heres the situation, The old set up was a temp switch with three terminals, only two wires hooked up, the temp probe going into the radiator pipe and the knob to dial the temp setting.
new one is very similar.. just looks different but has all the same things.
i have one main ignition switch wire, turns on when ign is on.
the other wire that hooks up to it switches the relay for the fan.
if i bridge the wires together... the fan works.. funny about that
if i hook it up to two of the termals on the new switch.. the fun is on all the time.. regardless of temp.. ive tried every possible combo for the three terminals, and turning the knob and heating the temp sender with no luck.. its either on or off..
before anyone pips up and says my wiring is dodgy.. its wired correctly so maybe the switch is kaput?! I bridged it together for no so i could get to work but its annoying having it on all the time.
any idea's?

I know this doesn't help your current problem, but what I did which might be an idea for you is get a factory 1 pin temp sensor from a auto parts shop.
They normally have lots of them and you can pick what you want in regards of the temp it switches on/off at.
I got one from a mitsubishi of some sort and it just earths the single pin at 90 degrees and opens again at 85 or there abouts.
Then all you need to do it run ign + to one side of the fan, and the other wire to the temp sensor. I had mine mounted in the radiator tank. But I know with 4AGE engines they sit in the thermostat housing.
The factory ones in 4AGE work a bit different, they pull away from earth to switch the fan on. Which is good as if the wire comes off or sensor breaks the fan will always be on.

how would i wire a single pin switch up?
are there any twin pin ones?

With the single wire ones, it usually is an earth so the +ve side of the fan you put ign + to, and the -ve side of the fan you put on the switch. Makes for a nice and simple circuit.

Should also mention.. the +ve to the fan is best to come from a relay that is switched on by ign+ or.... you could have the temp switch earth the relay and switch it on.. different ways to skin a cat!

Haha sorry to confuse you dude...
Ok... if the relay is hard to get at we can leave that alone.
Fit a single pin temp sensor that pulls to earth when gets hot.
You have 2 wires coming off your thermo fan (or should anyway).. One is positive, one negative. Put the negative to the single pin temp sensor. Put the positive to the positive wire coming off the relay. Easy!

Hmm probably going to confuse you more but just re-read your original post.. Sounds like the current temp sensor you have switches the relay on.
So its impossible to get to the relay? As I could explain how to rewire it all nice and easy..

oh wait i get ya now!
so lest say i have it wired up as it is now with NO switch at all.. the positive ignition switch powering the relay trigger.. and fan is on all the time..
so.. i take the earth off the fan (whihc is wired to a chassis bolt for eath) and use that as a single pin relay? \
that makes sence! so when it reaches a temp.. it allows earth and the circut is then closed!
thats so simple even i could do it
am i on the right track?
