I did a lot of research on this when setting up my 3TGTE, but found that no toyota CAS was easily modified to do the job. I ended up making an trigger setup with a hall effect sensor running off the crankshaft pulley (haltech ECU).
Maybe someone else has had better luck than me though....

thanks for the reply te72
kevin showed me one of these made by EMS but it retails $380 !
how did it look and fit in your engine? the reason i wanted to get a crank angle sensor was so i could install a bigger plenum and throttle body, but the dizzy cap is in the way.
anyways thanks for the help

Are you running the standard ECU and converting to direct fire or using an aftermarket ECU to run direct fire ?

celicaboy:
give me your email address if you want a picture of the trigger setup on my 3TGTE crank. The hall effect sensor on its own was $150, plus $40 for magnets, plus aluminium & machining time.
I got rid of the dizzy for exactly the same reason, its a bit bastard, and gets right in the way of a custom plenum with front mounted throttle body!

I have a basic unit that I make (bracket for sensor and trigger disc). Uses the Wolf sensor (maybe they are the same).
Bracket + disc = $150 - straight bolt on. (I have a 3T GTE with which to fit it to make sure that it is correct)
The sensor from Wolf is about $75.
If I have another sensor I can make just about anything work.
I have done several Wolfs and TurboRA28 has made the disc that I use and bracket work with the Autronic.

emails sent
Hey Jason, how does the Wolf sensor work? Is it a 2 channel hall effect that reads off a north & south pole on a magnet, or is it optical?
Cheers

Most aftermarket ECU's are made to trigger of a square wave ( hall switch ) some can be configured to trigger of either or both , If the ECU can be configured to trigger of a magnetic pickup like the toyota's use the 3TGTE dizy can be used as the main trigger but you will need another trigger setup somewhere for the home trigger which triggers before the main trigger No 1 ( to tell the ECU that the next main trigger is for No 1 cyl ) the No 1 main trigger usually is set to trigger about 60 to 100 Degrees BTDC No 1 .
I am using the 3SGTE dizy which I modified a little to run direct fire on my motor using Haltech E6S .

Phil,
It uses a magnetic pick up with north and south as you have described it has another trigger for reference which is 15 deg or so before #1 TDC. Each of the triggers are approx 5mm high and run for 5 degrees duration.
I hope that this answers your question.
