a normal 4AC T50 will go behind a GZE,but you might want to treat it a little gently. sprinter gearboxes are starting to become thin on the ground.
I've been after one for a couple of months now,as have a few other guys here.

I have a gearbox in smick condition. Car used to belong to a granny, so it is in top condition. I will sell it for the price I got it for, which is 300 including delivery to your capital city (I am in Adelaide).

king16, as far as I know both the jap and aus spec T50's have the same internals, the only difference is which side the clutch fork and slave cylinder are on (or is that the starter... no matter, same internals anyway).

Sam's right: There is no diff internally between oz and jap T50. What is different is the spedo worm gear (jap is 4.3 or 4.1, oz is for 3.9 only, and I guess some jap are 3.9 aswell, but not that common as they usually brought in with 4AG's).
Oz has 3A bellhousing. Jap will normally have 4A, but some 3A. Difference: 4A has clutch fork on driver side. Both mount started passenger side. So now only the starter is heated by the exhaust with 4AG. You can interchange the two. I'll be putting the 4A bellhousing I've got on my oz t50 and when she goes(280000Km), I'll put in on my jap t50 (which has 3A bellhousing, don't ask).
To the original question: using AE86 T50 will be a waste of money. If you are installing into Te72, then use TE72 T50's (I'm pretty sure they have T50's like older celica's). You may have to sort out a funky clutch as the input shaft has different spline number, but for the cost of early T50's, you could go through a few before the cost of 1 AE86 T50. The clutch thing: normal 4A clutch's will be for late t50 with 24 (or 22) spline input, but the older t50 are 20spline or something. You would have to find a clutch that bolts to the 4a flywheel, or use a different flywheel, and appropriate clutch. Something in the back of my mind say honda civic or accord flywheel from some ancient toymods forum post: search the old forum.
Jaz I think the above is correct, but it is late. I'd like to see more reply's before I'd be confident in doing anything, but it's worth thinking about as lots of the guy's I know are going through T50's in thier gze's, and there NOT cheap!! Justin's gbox(which is sold to mate of mine) is pretty cheap. Usually $400 to $500 from wrecker's here in SA
