1JZ hydro fan - switchable. Sat, 09 August 2003 14:47 Go to next message
Has anyone fitted a switch to short out the 1JZ temp sensor for the hydro fan?

I noticed that even at 100degrees the resistance of the temp sensor is still around 1 ohm. It takes massive underbonnet temps for my fan to come on to full speed (ive tried it with another sensor and its still the same).

so, i was thinking of fitting a switch on the temp sensor (straight short) and being able to switch the fan on to full speed whenever i want. That thing shifts a hell of a lot of air.

Anyone tried it? Im just cautious in case a straight short upsets the fan ECU...

you dont really want to make it any cooler though, testing has shown the 1j makes its best hp at 98 degrees anyway.

Celicamad had this problem with the wrong themstat or something where they found the car was not fully out of warm up mode till over 90 deg, and didnt make its best power till 98.

I think ive already made substantially cooler by fitting the koyo !

I wouldnt use the switch all the time.. just when sitting in traffic on a hot day...

I rememebr now it was his thermo's which were keeping his temps in the low 90's. that car was running poorly espeially on cold days when it really should run better.
As stated above the car was still in warmup mode.

I have 2 14" thermo fans, and havn't got my water temp gauge in yet, these usually dont kick in unless you have been driving and then stay stationary for a while. What sort of temps should I be expecting as normal when the gauge goes in? And at what temp should the fans kick in? And what is a hydrolic fan?

Thanks.

Hydro fan is a radiator fan controlled by hydraulics, rather than electric or viscous fan. The fan has a power steering pump type of assembly.. when the sensor in the bottom of the rad picks up warm or high temps by the fan ECU, the fan gets more fluid pushed round it speeding it up.

As for typical temps.. the 1J runs hot, and ive heard the thrmostat doesnt open until about 95 degrees... that gives you an idea of typical temps.

I'd best refer this to celicamad, he is the one who figured all this out. I only know that yes 1j 's really do love to run hot, 95-100 is typical, but temp shown on a gauge will of course depend on the placement of the sender.
