as some people may know, my left shock is completely screwed, and the right one isn't perfect either. I'm wondering is there any point or way to fix them up (as they were great when they worked), or am I better off just buying the same type new (or possibly something better) ?

What are they? Are they rebuildable? If so, probably best to price recokits/price to have reco'd vs new same or better. not a difficult job as long as they aren't pressurised, if so basically forget doing it yourself it they can be reco'd.
