MA61 brakes on AE86

Ok, my dad has got himself another MA61, so theres a spare set of just about everything there. Of course ill score the seats, and mags for my AE86 but I'm wondering about the brakes. Has anybody done a conversion like this before? can maybe tell me what problems I'm going to come across, whether its worth attempting at all? The whole car is there so i can get any bits i would need from the MA61.

A lot better than Sprinter brakes, that's for sure! For starters they're ventilated which is a huge improvement in itself, and they're also bigger (258mm, not sure what Sprinter discs are but they're tiny). The caliper is pretty good too, only single piston but plenty of pad area which is the main thing.
Simon is over-simplifying things a little though! You need to use the entire MA61 hub assembly, which has the side effect of increasing the wheel offset by about 9mm each side. You have to use the MA61 calipers and they won't bolt on to the RA40 strut so you need to fabricate a new backing plate. If you want more details you'll find them on my web site - I did this conversion on my RA23 Celica a while ago.

would u say its better than evosti's braking system he made up from the sprinter?
its probably be cheaper though

well if you do the hilux/pug upgrade yourself you can probably get it done for under $1K depending on how far you want to take it ie using new parts, reco'd parts or used parts.
i dont know how much the celica upgrade costs, or how it goes but i spose you have to compare how much they cost, and if its worth the bit extra for the 4 piston upgrade.

FWIW i paid 50 bucks for my brakes
just need a bracket made (free) and im set to bolt it on.
better brakes then JDM ae86.. MA61 brakes haul up a 1350 kg car` pretty well.. im sure it will do ok on my 850 kg car

yeah if you already got the parts may as well go that way. dunno bout engineering tho, dunno if you can engineer a sprinter with a more powerful motor with those brakes but i would say you can. i know you can engineer the hilux/pug upgrade forsure tho.

ae86's dont weigh 850kg (theyre 950 kg) and ma61's are not 1350kg (theyre closer to 1250kg).
but I take your point.
you cant just use the struts as is on an ae86 - be aware of the negative camber created doing this.

chris: mines been some what STRIPPED.
ive been lead to believe that an MA61 weighs around 1300kgs
and the RA40 strut bolts in.
the RA60 strut is the one that causes camber probs

I have a complete MA61 strut and brake assembly on my 28. They work really well, maybe not up to the Hilux/pug system but a damn sight better than the crap that Toyota put on it.
As chriss said, you will probably have problems with chamber. Mine needed eccentric bushes installed in the lower chassis mounts of the arm to give me more negative chamber.
The strut angles on a MA61 is a few degrees more than the celica which I assume is the same as the sprinter.

There won't be any problems with engineering in this situation. I didn't even have to upgrade the brakes in my Supra after I installed the 2JZ! Chances are you wouldn't be required to upgrade the brakes in an AE86 either, but with the Supra brakes you'd be laughing.

Only two people will be able to experience mine at one time...the two in the back are still trying to breathe properly due to them being crammed by the no leg room and the sunroof intruding into their headspace!

If they are good enough for a Lotus Esprit Turbo, then they are good enough for my AE86. Well I actually have Celica RA60 brakes, but I am lead to belive they are the same. So I lost some negative camber, by eyeball it doesn't look positive, but at least I know that at the bottom of the hill I will be able to stop.
I've got a set of EBC Greenstuff V4 pads with the stock rotors. I can't get them to fade, unlike the Bendix standard pads that were in there before. For $170 they ought to be. The standard pads were good for 5 - 10 mins of sprited hill and hairpin action, but having to back off half way through isn't fun.
I took some comparison photos before I installed them, but I don't know how to post them here. I can email them to those interested, it's at least 20% bigger in the pad.

Due to the massive interest in the pics, 2 people , i've decided to put them on a page.

For those interested in costs, i got the pair of struts, which were complete, from a self serve wreckers for 170 bucks. Would've been a few dollars cheaper if I took the springs and tops off, but I didn't have my spring compressor handy.

You should try stock brakes then
Anything better !
My shoe wedged in between the wheels would brake better than the stock setup haha...
They seem a bit bigger and at least theyre ventilated.. Does anyone know if DBA stock bigger or slotted + ventilated discs for ra60's ?
And someone mentioned it increases offset by 9..
Does this mean some wheels wont be able to fit on them afterwards or it will just stick out a bit more ?
thanx

DBA stock slotted rotors for the RA65/MA61. I'm using them on my MA61 with EBC Greenstuff pads and they work pretty well, even on a bargearse Supra.
