getting roadworthy -rust- Tue, 12 August 2003 02:37 Go to next message
hi guys, can i get a hand here with some questions about getting roadworthyness for my celica?

with reguards to rust there is large bubbled area's where roofracks once sat and some on corner of doors and a few patches on the chassis? rail part between front and rear wheels + plus some in corners of the wheeltubs? boot is rusted out bad along the bottom strip where the bootseal goes, was told i can cut all along and weld a new strip in,

i assume it can't be leaking oil?

what must be done for me to rwc for my car? as i don't wanna be going back and forth wasting money.

i appriecate if you can help me here,

Alex

By the sounds of it you've got a Celica!???

Hope you know how to weld or know someone that does.

That rust between your front and rear wheels is actually in the sil, not the chassis rail. This is due to all the drain holes being plugged. Un plug them and dry it out. Not as bad as it seems.

To solve all your rust problems just start cutting the bubble's out and about 4cm's around them. That's the only way you can be sure you get most of it out, otherwise it will keep coming back. That's what I've had to do to my project. Once the rust is cut out just weld new bits of metal in and then shape with metal filler or bog. Not sure how legal bog is though in some states.

everyone loves bog Laughing
Slap it on there sand it back primer it up they wont know the differnce Laughing
Get some sandpaper ready.

If you take it over the bits they will get out a hammer like thing and bash all the rust spots if it goes strait threw it wont pass - i think Confused

aw comeon guys, take some advice from the expert. Aside from painted sticy tape, this is what I did when I fixed up an ancient Camira - and got it past pink slip.

I went to Fiberglass Material Services in Seven Hills and bought 4 litres of resin and 3 square metres of fiberglass mesh and went to town!

A little respray of the panels after some very nice fibreglassing and you would NEVER know. I was so impressed with myself. I had never seen rust like this before, and she was all sorted sweet as.

The fact that the car blew its head gasket the day I got it registered didn't impress me though.

depends on how good the price Cool i'd rather get a decent job doen or else i'l go superbodgy like the previous owners did, ha,

anyone know some bodgy shops near me to get a rwc done?

thanks so far guys, i think mr fibreglass is winning at the moment Shocked, and a close second the projob. did youcut/sand the rust off a bit then do the fibreglassing? wouldn't it be bulging out a bit off the panels?

thanks so far guys,

Alex

well it all depends. Fiberglass sets VERY hard, naturally, and you can mix the resin up so that it is very stiff and will set very quickly. But this isn't absolutely necessary - depending on your timeframe and paitience level. Mine is quite small. Smile

I scraped all the rust out I could, and the sanded the area as well as using a wire bit on a drill, and then painted the surrounds with the K & H Rust Converter (very good stuff)

I then applied fiberglass to the interior of the panel, and waited till it was quite stiff and then applied one or two exterior coats. The bulk of the fiberglass support came from the interior so that the 'wall' was actually quite strong.

Then I attacked it with an orbital sander and brought it down to a nice smooth surface and then I painted it!

Presto! Smile

The guy that I know can also get you a RWC if you get him to do the rust. He does a good job which I can prove if you come and have a look at my girlfriends car.

For white cars i've used silicon to fill holes as large as 5cm in diameter... it's nice and thick + its easy to smooth over... just have to watch that they dont see and light holes poking thru...

On a side note... panel rust in "cut out and fill" sizes are absolutely legal.... only rust in critical chasis frame / important places of logical safety are illegal...

Does any one know if a good condition spare tyre is needed... ?? One would think so... Sad
