Mk2 Corona's big day out
|
Tue, 12 August 2003 02:59
|
 |
After a range of frustrating teething problems, I finally had the Corona Mk2 dyno tuned today.
With an internally standard motor, but 48mm ITBs, mandrel bent extractors, 2.5" exhaust and Motec M800, the 'naturally asthmatic' 2JZGE made a reasoably healthy 148 rwkW @ 6600 rpm. Power tailed off quite quickly after that.
Here is the dyno graph:

I'd like to thank Allan and Glenn for their tireless help, advice and enthusiasm.
I'm looking forward to the grunter!

Nice work! Looks like those stock cams are a real bottleneck though. I can't wait to see the power curve of the REAL engine!

Im impressed
Can't wait for the 'real results' !
BTW, one guy at that workshop owned a silver VL Turbo, is he still running insane amounts of boost through it and rebuilding it every now and then or what. Im pretty sure it was in excess of 30psi??

Yeah that sounds familiar Dave.
Is that the 1ggte corona ?
Hehe for the benefits of others could you possibly stage it with a ported head, then add the cams later
Just so we can see a dyno comparison of all stages

was that in 4th gear?
180kph in 4th at redline would be about 230kph in 5th at redline?

Internally stock! WOW
Thats a huge figure. Just by doing extractors and some ITBs. Thats fucking COOOL.
... how do you put an air filter(s) on ITBs?
Can you give us some more pics of the engine?

If you look at the bottom left of the engine pic you can see apulley with 4 nuts on it, thats where the fan 'used' to be.
So one would assume thermos are being run.

I don't beleive they take too much power to operate, its more of a case of trying to fit the engine in the engine bay, the fan has to be removed

Thanks guys.
HKS Pete, most people put 'socks' on their trumpets...they are circular foam filters that are just cable tied to the trumpet.
Like this:

Dylo: as Allan said, th F series has long gone to be replaced with a G series 4.3:1 LSD Hilux rear with disc brakes.

That's my car, you bastard!
Well done on the figure dude, was happy to see it. Like everyone else I look forward to seeing the end result.
I am getting close to deciding on some kind of engine for mine... someone buying my Supra would make the decision a lot easier.
coronamark2 - no offence, but from the few posts of yours that I have bothered to read it sounds like you drive like an idiot. May want to settle down before you lose your license and/or kill someone.

I could be like everyone else and say - yeah great result, wow whatever, when u gunna put the cams in blah blah.....
but hang on.. what does that figure of 148kw actually tell us?
it pulled that figure on that dyno on that day.. its relevant to - what??
in the never ending discussion of dyno figures it means nothing..
did you dyno it stock to get a baseline? we know factory they put out around 165kw - and thats all we can say until you compare both motors on the same dyno.
the 1/4 run you put it through will reveal more.
and yeah coronamk2 you do sound like the typical hoon 18y.o - what u tryin to proove?

I agree the figure on its own means little - the mixtures (the important thing) were spot on. RwkW is not an SI unit.
That said, I was in the fortunate position of having Glenn there with his 3SGE RA45. The 3SGE was run in on Motec's engine dyno (well known to be consistent and accurate) and it produced 237 flywheel horsepower. On this particular chassis dyno it produced 136 rwkW, thus providing a form of calibration if you will. Assuming similar drivetrain losses, working backwards and being conservative, this figure probably suggests the 2JZ is producing somewhere around 250-260 hp at the flywheel.

You sound like the typical constable care!
so because i admit i do the odd burnout, have the odd drag or break the speed limit every now and then im a hoon? i would bet 80% of the people on this forum have and enjoyed doing one of the above.
so gramps what are you trying to prove that the guilt trip will change my attitude towards driving errr no

It is closed-minded people like yourself that cause half of our (car enthusiasts) problems and almost make me support some of the laws that they are bringing into place today. You seem to think that, because there is someone worse than you, that your driving is not a problem.
I certainly made no mention that I drove like a saint, in truth I have probably been privy to far worse 'offences' than those I am berating you for. However, it all comes down to being responsible rather than following the road rules to the letter.
Everyone has a different idea of what is responsible, however I would suggest that even on a forum like this, 99% of people would think that the acts you describe in your posts aren't acceptable.
I have no problems with the thought of doing double the speed limit in a modern car on a sealed & divided multi lane highway when there are no 'civilians' around. But the thought of creeping slowly towards 180km/h in a rickety old Corona early on the way to work is just plain daft.

Really?
For the record, when my 1UZ was dynoed last year, it got 127RWKW (albeit with "around" 400NM Torque). FWIW, the mixtures were also spot-on...
Still, bloody good result for the 3S.
Oh, and the 2J? Very nice!
*casts about for ITB setup and extractors for the 1UZ*

The 3S is VERY modified. Glenn brought it along to tune out a flat spot and add in extra ignition advance. It was quite impressive. Initial total advance was 27 degrees and resulted in 136 rwkW @ around 8000 rpm. Stagewise addition of 3 extra degrees of advance only resulted in 3 extra peak rwkW, but he picked up 10-15 rwkW thru the midrange - the power curve fattened out quite nicely. That and tuning out the flat spot should hopefully improve driveability enormously. A road test (private of course)seemed to confirm that but, as Chrisss has suggested, the real proof will be in the track times.
