Just trying to find some info on these, and any opinions on how they would run on a 3tgte. thanks!

They can be rebuilt. DTS did mine with a steel exhaust wheel and modified the covers to suit available bearings.

Hey, I've been running one on a 3tgt for a while now. the spool up isn't too bad with a lot of boost coming on between 3500-4000 though your boost controller manifold and exhaust set-up will influence this (I'm using a turbosmart gated adjustable bleed valve). This isn't much different to the standard turbo but you're getting a hell of a lot more flow for it.The ceramic wheel is fragile but if treated right it can last a long time at decent boost levels. I've heard they can safely go up to 17psi, I've had mine up there for a bit but my injectors and pistons wouldn't support it so it's been running at around 14psi for ages with no trouble, from what I understand they'll also be running less shaft speed to produce this level of boost on a smaller capacity engine (having come from a 3ltr). If I had the chance I'd go for something a bit smaller like a t28 (200sx) for much better response time and they're pretty plentiful with a lot of scope for adjusting to your needs. From all accounts they spool up bloody quick on 4ag engines with no loss of top-end so they should work pretty well on a 1.8ltr.
Tanman, how much did it cost to have yours rebuilt?

Tanman Sorry two years a go no one would rebuild them. But its probably not a bad turbo that tanman has but for $1000 + the cost of the original turbo you can get your self a high flowed t3/t4 hybrid that would be better matched to the engine.

The VG30 turbo was on my old TA22 when I bought it so it was the best option for me at the time. If I was going to buy a new turbo it would probably be one of the Garret GT25 series.

Thanks all. This will sound like a stupid question, but I'm not a turbo guy....does ceramic mean ceramic ball bearings? I have heard that the VG30 comes in 2 flavours, a ball bearing version and a non ball bearing version, and they perform differently.
Tanman - "strong boost from 3000" - is that AFTER rebuild with different parts, or before it? And what car is this?
Chriph - what sort of car is this in? Any idea how much a t28 would cost, or how hard it would be to get one to fit the 3tgte manifold?

A couple nissan and toyota turbos use ceramic EXHAUST wheels in the turbo.. This is all well and good around 14psi and under but over that the shaft speed and heat can cause the ceramic wheel to shatter or simply come apart off the shaft..
The vg30 turbo is pretty big and would be good on a 1.8L..
I have a friend with one on his 2L Rb20det motor and it has loads of top end power..
If you want response go for a t28 as mentioned.. These are steel wheeled and would go good on a 1.8L also..

A t28 won't cost you any more than the vg30, probably less. Both will be about just as hard to fit, I had to get a custom manifold made up and if you're going to do this go for the t28 first up - you can always get it high-flowed or change the wheels if you find the top-end lacking. The only easy fit or replacement where you can use the existing manifold (that I know of) is the toyota ct26 which just requires some holes being re-drilled or an adaptor plate made up. These will perform similarly to the vg30 (they were also used on a 3ltr engine) but may spool up slower however they are steel-wheeled and a fair bit tougher with a higher boost threshold. I'm using it in an ra28 and the lack of low down boost gives you the shits sometimes getting off the line. Chris.

Thanks all. Running over 14psi is not such an issue, as If I do this I would be running an internally stock engine for quite a long time ($$$).. and I have been told 15psi is the absolute max you can run on stock internals anyway; some people say less.
A friend suggested a late model RB20DET would be a very good choice on the 3tgte, and shares the same pattern as the vg30. Any other thoughts?
