icon4.gif  RA2x rear swaybar... How does yours mount? how many brackets? Wed, 13 August 2003 12:21 Go to next message
Howdy,
now ive bought a rear sway bar finally for my ra28 and its an old aftermarket-type one which i was told connects to the trailing arms, But it is missing AT LEAST one mounting bracket.. Confused

it came with a bracket at either end which consists of two d-brackets back to back (if you know what i mean?) with bolts holding them together and d-bushes inside both D's, with the bar going through one D, and the trailing arm through the other..
AND
one bracket which is another D with a larger D-hoop which goes over the diff-axle housing on either side of the centre.. This is the bracket which i can duplicate beacuse it at least came with one.. so that shouldnt be too hard.

What my question is, is how is everyones rear sway bars connected and mounted on their RA23's and RA28's?
How many of the back-to-back D-brackets at either end of the bar are used to mount this type of bar?? The person i bought it from wasnt sre if it should have two sets of these mounts either side for the trailing arms, as well as the diff hoop brackets??
Does this sound right? or should i just try it with one set? it does look like the paint has worn off the sway bar in two places maybe on either arm..
If anyone can recognise the type of mounts or methods described above and could shed some light on them that would be cool..

I took some close up pictures of the rear bar and the mounts that DID come with it, but my camera has suddenly refused to communicate with my computer for an unknown reason.. so as soon as it works again il post up the pics..

Thanks in advance for any advice,

cheers

Oh and am i right in saying that the late-ra40-type rear bar is different to the bar i bought mentioned above? i heard the late-ra40 ones mount to the chassis somewhere? whereas the one i have apparently mounts to the trailing arms..

Has anybody ended up experimenting with the ra40 swaybar on earlier model celica's????
I remember discussing it a while back a a few certain members, and was about to go and rip one from u-pull-it to fit to my car!! but when someone said the ra40 diffs came with special mounts or holes or something, and then sleeka spares had this 2nd hand bar, which was most of a kit, so i chose not to.

also, I just measured the rear bar and it's 18mm diameter.
is this good to run with a 24.5 mm bar on the front of my ra28?
They are both considerably larger than either standard item..but will they work well with eachother?

Thanks again

There is a total of 8 'D' brackets altogether, mounted in pairs back to back, meaning four on each trailing arm, in two locations, forward on the trailing and then a few inches rearward of that on each trailing arm. I had one of these on an old TA22 I wrecked a few years ago.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Mitch.

This is the bar that fits by attaching around the axle and being bolted to plates near the chassis rails. Not the same as the bar you have.

RA40's have plates welded on to the diff for mounting an anti roll bar (swaybar) on. I think they may come fitted with one on them standard. Ra28's don't have these brackets because they were never an option. (Don't know about the GT's, they had a different diff anyway).

I would be interested to see a photo of the bar you are talking about. I have not seen them mounted to the trailing arms before.

If you are going to up the diameter of the front bar, then definitly put one on the back.

Hey thanks heaps ra23celica for the info.. It was really helpful, i got the answer i needed within a day of posting it.. Much appreciated guys, especially the pics they help illustrate things we talk about much better..

Now if only i knew how to post up the pics of the bar i bought.. The file-attachment button keeps dissappearing from the reply screen and i dont have something to host them on..(?)

umm, im puzzled.? Razz

Now i know i need to make up 4 more of those D-brackets and another diff-hoop-mount.. As well as getting 8 new 18mm D-bushings and maybe 2 for the diff D-mounts..

Thanks again guys,

Actually, from memory the last time i looked under an RA40 having heard of them using a factory rear swaybor i noticed that the brackets were indeed NOT welded up to the diff, they were simply bolted up much like in the pic posted above.

Either way im going to the wreckers tomorrow so i can answer the question 100% tomorrow arvo. But from the last time i checked you could potentially remove the whole RA40 rear swaybar setup and install into any RA2*.

hmmm I want to hear this, even the standard RA40 rear bar would be an upgrade from the RA28 no bar, I like the sounds of this, you get to that wreckers Karl, mush mush.

Yeh i would like to hear this too definately..
Been meaning to do the same for ages but never gotten around to it!
Pity i bought the aftermarket type one, i wonder if anyone has experienced both types of swaybar setup on the rear??
What do you think would be more effective? the trailing-arm type bar,
or the chassis-mounted stocky type bar??

Hmm..

Well I might just have under my house one of the very rare RA40 diffs complete with factory anti roll bar seats.

dammit. For the first time in a long time... there was only ONE RA40 that i saw in Pick'n'Payless (was rushed out!) and i couldnt see any in the Toyota zone.

The one i did see did indeed have the welded mounts like GOLD28 is mentioning, although i still SWEAR that i have seen an RA40 with the mounts like i mentioned earlier. Ill try to look again another time - else do your own dirty work! Razz
