i agree with sprintr,
the 4age 16v (100kw FWD) will prolly be the most value for money. they're robust, easy to chuck into an ae82, they're relatively cheap, and are readily available from most decent toyota wreckers. on the driveability side, i'm sure you've heard plenty about them already.

is your rolla a KE55 or a KE70?
KE70 can be easily converted to a 4A-GE using AE71 parts.

rob_RA40 wrote on Thu, 14 August 2003 19:39 | u can use the AE71 engine crossmember to mount the 4A-GE. The AE71 came with the ol' 4A-C
as for converting a 4A-GE to RWD check out the 4A-GE websites round the net (there are heaps of them just google)
and check out all of the tech articles here

Agreed...
to 82rolla, I also own one of these things (an '82 KE70 XX).
It now runs a 100KW 4AGE with extractors and a 2.5" exhaust system. How does it go? Well, put it this way, it's putting out more than twice the power of your 4K...So it goes very nicely! What's even better, is that we've kept it virtually completely stock-looking. Viewed on the street, it's indistinguishable from a standard example (except if you look closely, you can see that the alloy "XX" rims are actually 14", rather than the stock 13"s, and there is a shortened 2.5" exhaust poking out the back...As for Commodores, it leaves a lot of V6 Commodore drivers looking like this: ===> ===> ===>
Check out the articles Rob linked...It's well worth the swap!

a 9 inch diff is WAY overkill for a 4age... even a turbo 4age.. hell even a 3sgte.
I would maybe fit a f series from a Mk 2 corona, then if you want an LSD fit one.. or.. just stick with the t series diff that the KE70 has. T series will hold up to a 4age ok, depends on how you drive too.
You can also use the T-50 gbox.. again.. depends how you drive.. if you dont flat change or change quickly it should last years.

Agreed with all of the above - 4ag your old girl - stick with your stock diff - and maybe refresh the t50 - and it will be a happy package - your only need of worry is if you start going bigger HP figures - like forced induction . the t50 + diff will handle decent mild cams without much issue at all - its only when you start generating more than around 180 - 200 HP at the engine that they will complain - from what ive seen with similar setups in celicas

I agree 100% with the conversion suggestions placed before you.
Myself i am in the process of such a conversion in my AE71 (just beginning) and it is proving rather simple! Parts aint to hard to come by and its mostly bolt in with a little fabrication work.
To do the conversion using the 100kW 4A-GE as found in AE92 SX an GTi you will need:
# intake manifold "cut and shut" to put the throttle on the other end
# 4a-ge rwd water pump/pipes. Alternatively you can weld up some new stuff
# AE71 crossmember
# T50 gearbox and g'box x-member as found in an AE71/AE86 corolla
# NOT SURE if the KE70 has a different diff, but if so you need the AE71/AE86 rear axle and diff
# new AE71 engine mounts
# AE71 clutch hydraulics - not sure if the KE70 uses cable or hydraulic clutch?
Either way, when using a 4A type motor all the bits you need are easily found on an AE71 or AE86.
Another option, is using the 4age "silvertop" 20valve motor. This are also FWD, but can also be converted to RWD with a little more effort. Also relatively cheap these days.
