Are they four or three speed? Driving my new car at speed for the first time last night, I only counted three speeds, and damn at 100 with almost 4 grand on the clock I was thinking, this thing needs a fourth. My mate said to me that all old auto's are three speeds, so whats the go?

Yup, definitely 3-speed; 4-speed autos weren't introduced until the RA60 Celica. In fact 4-speed autos were very rare on any car before the 80's.

interesting fact here: the toyota 4 speed auto made its debut with the MA45 supra in 79/80
they boasted in the advertisement that the only other car manufacturer to offer a 4 speed auto at the time was mercedes.

My 3spd auto had no get up and go in it. It struggled to 80km's. A half hour trip took us about 45 minutes (keeping in mind the car was unregistered so we were trying to keep a low profile)

Byargh I can tell this auto is going to drive me nuts in the cold, lack of clutch and/or choke meant that it stalled a few times on take off This engine would be soooo much nicer with a manual, its heaps nicer then the engine in my manual 23. I think when I put a 1G in my silver celica I'll put this engine into my black one and finally free it off this awful auto
