What diff ratio? Sat, 16 August 2003 10:10 Go to next message
Can anyone give me any ideas on what diff ratio I should choose for my car?
If you dont know, I have a TA22 with a 3S-GTE and a W58 box.

Thanks

Its a Hilux diff, So it will probably have some useless ratio! I have not used the car at all with the current engine and gearbox!

Around 3.9:1 would be good IMO. Not sure how hard it would be to source a G series ratio that tall though.

I might make some phone calls tomorrow and see what I can come up with Confused Or maybe I could just buy the 3.9:1 set from the same place Rod found.

depends on what revs you want to be doing at 100kph down the hi-way preferably at the point your engine makes the most torque for least revs without boost in 4th gear that way you drop back the revs with overdrive

a OJ in the dark for you car would be a 4.1 or 3.9

my MA70 has a 3.9 and .71 over drive does 2200rpm at 100kph and isnt too bad of the mark for a big tank 3.54 would be ideal for the hi-way tho

Well maybe I should just track down a second hand 4.1 center from the jap wreckers and try that! If I dont like it I can just buy a new 3.9 set later on.

the code on the compliance was G312.

I actually enjoy the 4.1 behind my 1g

running 15psi and a w58, it gets about 100km/hr out of 2nd gear ~150km/hr out of 3rd 200 out of 4th nd 250ish out of 5th.

I'm currenty running a 3.909 and it is only slightly different. I actualy found it to be worse at 100km/hr acceleration, where as the 4.1 seemed to be in a sweet spot to pull in 4th or throw it back to 3rd for a real pull

My 5me was doing 3000rpm @ 110km/hr in a w58 5th gear with a 3.9 ratio. Was too high imo. Should my 302 do the same revs providing i leave my box/ driveline the same?

You are aware cast iron v8's into ma61's have some serious heat issues? i suggest you track down v8supra (i think that was his name on here) he has an ma61 with a holden v8 and had issues with stuff melting

i would also think you may want a 2.something diff for that engine in an ma61 due to the fact you will need a few jerry cans straped to the back just to make it between servos, also you will be rowing thru gears like a lancer driver rice boy in the wet and the noise of all the push rods and stuff at 3000rpm will be deafining (ok last one im streching it a little)

What heating issues? Melting what?

Noise of pushrods and "stuff" at 3000rpm? A mates 351 cleveland revs to 7000 with no noise engine noise whatsoever. Cruises at 2800 - No excess sound. What type of engine are you basing this info on?

Holden v8's are significantly different to ford WINDSORs.
Too late to change my mind, blocks away being bored and have all parts here ready to go in.

Lets not debate v8s again please. I believe it is what got my cousin banned from toymods.

Btw is "suprav8" you're talking about.

robbo i would hav thought a 3.7 would be better for the v8 application as ya wouldnt have to rev it to get speed

with the 4.1 it revs at 3000 at 100km/h bit high for my liking im gunna go 3.7 next

i think old falcon 302s used like a 3.1 ratio or something, so with anything over 3.5 it should be rather responsive. It should rev to around 6500 - 7000 given the mods ive done work to plan! So too low (below 3.5) ratio wont be the ideal one.

A 302 Windsor with a bit of work done to it will go the best with a set of 4.1 gears , A stock Windsor works well with 3.23 gears . I put a stock Windsor in my sons 1990 hilux which had 4.5 gears and by about 90 kmh it was out of the torque range but it got bent like a banana before we could fit some higher gears ( Tried to move 50 meters of safety rails on a overpass one rainy night ) !!

Well it looks like the ratio I have now is a 4.875:1 which is very useless to me Sad So anyone want to buy some gears?
