Help With 18RG Mods??? Tue, 09 July 2002 13:19 Go to next message
Ok, Atm my 18RG is dead stock standard, Simply running a 2" with extractors, And the stock twin Solex carbs.

I am looking into a port and polish job, And possibly some lumpier cams, I was quoted $850 for billets! but have found a place that do regrinds for about $100 each cam.....

I heard that there aint much point shaving the head at all to raise compression as the 18rg's have about 9.5:1 compression as it is.......But surely a mild shave wouldnt hurt....would it?

I am looking to run the thing on pump fuel, Atm i run half LRP and half Premium.... and hopefully can keep it that way.....

Yeah...any help would be cool, As i dont Really wanna rip the bottom end out for my eventual 60thou overbore etc. etc. Wink

CHeers anyhow
Ben

Does anyone have a rough idea how much a mild head job (no pun intednded) is worth? hmmmmm

Port and polish: probably the worst bang-for-your-buck mod there is. It's a good thing to do on crappy old iron V8's with poorly shaped ports, but your 18R-G is a different story. It doesn't hurt if you want to clean up the casting dags yourself, but don't spend money getting someone else to do it.

Reground cams: almost certainly the best bang-for-your-buck mod for NA engines! Not as good as new billets, but a hell of a lot cheaper. Do it.

Shaved head: dodgy. The correct way to increase the compression ratio is to replace the pistons. Not cheap I know, but at least you won't screw up the cam timing.

LRP: why the hell are you running that crap? All 18R-G's have hardened valve seats, so valve seat recession is not an issue (hence leaded fuel is not necessary). Run it on premium unleaded, it will run great on that.

if you want to raise compression and your valves are dished just look for some flat faced items, GT told me that little trick shame that was after i had put my 5m head togther Sad
(18r-c valves in the 5m head would of worked it looked like... 5m needs all the extra compression it can get! 63rwkw Cry

dont grind your cams as your base circle will in crease and your shim clearence will increase better to weld up and regrind ans shims will change say 20 thou

if you have to change your valve clearences you may aswell keep all the existing shims and have all the valves retipped as the shims a a total bitch to find

the only ones i could find in qld that would fit were old pugeot shims and they are rare toyota dont sell them and no one keeps them in stock. otherwise i got quoted $35 each for a custom thickness shim. but if you get a new cam and all the valve clearences arent big enough you can take the shims to be ground down.

Don't use unleaded unless you know for sure that it is the slightly later 18rg with the updated heads (with the hardened valve seats. I am also running an 18RG, it is the earliest 18rg, withthe toyota head, so i use LRP, if you aren't sure of whether yours can use premium unleaded, then take it to a mechanic who works with the old toyota twin cams, he should be able to tell you.

INteresting reading that, Cheers

I was led to beleive by someone on a different forum, That the stock valves in 18RG heads, were the biggest you could go for? Is that true or can i go for Bigger valves?

Im still weighing up wether i would be better off waiting and doing an entire ground up rebuiild, Seems stupid to just do one half and leave the bottom end all stock......

Has anyone here got a 60thou overbore with wild head work yadda yadda??? What is a rwkw reading i could go for?? bearing in mind it will be carby'd, 60 thou, Still going the port and polish, maybe bigger valves if i can, Lumpier cams - might ave for billets.......And i guess a carby upgrade to webers or the like

Cheers for any help

Ben

PS: in case you hadnt yet noticed, im still kinda new to these engines, I owned a gemini for ages and didnt think id ever sell it, So i knew nothing about toyota engines, or any other engine for that matter Smile

PPS: alan, My stock 18rg is only putting out just over 63rwkw, i was told it put out 64-65 on the dyno Neutral
