icon4.gif  4A-GE into early VW Golf ??? Mon, 18 August 2003 08:04 Go to next message
Has anybody done a conversion like this??

I realise that custom mounts would be required but does the engine actually fit? These cars are really light (805kgs!!) Shocked and would have a great power to weight ratio with just a 20valve.

Any advice appreciated. Smile

are these FWD or RWD??

what suspension setup do they have??

custom engine moutns are the least of your worries i would think.. and if a 4AG can fit into a KE10 engine bay, it will probably fit into a Golf.

if it's RWD, it could be quite a little weapon, and much mroe reliable with the toyota powerplant Very Happy

would have performance like a KE20 or KE30 with 4AG Smile
but potentially better suspension and handling?

it will never be a toyota tho Razz

yeah they are pretty nice, but an EKI 4K is still a 4K Razz

i went for a ride in one with a 2L 2/3T with an LSD in the states and it was pretty scary at times... very quick and fun, tho a little twitchy at 180 (when the tyres scrubbed on the arches...)

they might be pretty hard to find since they were not released in australia in RWD format, they were definitely in the US and in NZ, and Bill S. brought his with him from NZ!!

if you find two, ship one to NSW Wink

SXer lives in sydney.

The golfs are all FWD. AFAIK the big problems to be overcome would be:
engine mounts for a 4a-ge & transmission
custom drive shafts
relocation of other under-bonnet equipment (steering etc)
conversion to EFI
upgrading the stock brakes (standard car has only 55kW!!)

I'm sure plenty of parts (EFI, brakes) could be sourced from a later model GTI but the custom stuff would be expensive...

RWD starlets aren't really an option in Sydney eventhough I would prefer to stick to toyotas.

Cheers Smile
