the improvement comes from the higher energy spark that the ignitor and coil provide.
another option, probably cheaper, is to get a Jaycar HEI kit, which costs about $55? can use the points for the signal, and has a fixed spark length and extends the dwell, giving higher spark energy. i have 20-25mm sparks using a K motor dizzy with points, a stock oil filled coil, and a Jaycar HEI. it also limits the coil current so it doesn't overcharge.
i recently got an AE82 elec dizzy for $70 from a wrecker in campbelltown, and there was one in my mums AE82. it is a carby 4AC and i think is an 86 model.

yup, my mums one is a sedan, and the one at the wreckers was a hatch.
it had also been recently recod with new reluctor, new advance weights and new ingitor
be careful that the advance weights are not worn. the one in my mums car had oval shaped holes in the weights, and the posts were half gone!! so the weights were rubbing on the housing. not good.
the wrecker i got it from was "Big Johns" and they are almost always good.
good luck.
if you can't find an elec dizzy, the jaycar kit will be just as good. the points hardly wear (mine are more than 3 years old now with virtually no wear) and i have had no probs with it in the last 6 years.
