Hey guys,
Rala's RA28 has been failed for pink slip due to worn pitman and idler arms.
How the heck to i get the pitman arm off the steering box??!?!?
I've got the nut off, but the bugger is stuck on there pretty good.
thanks,
Cam

I went through the same thing 2 weeks ago. I was told put a pole through the top of the engine bay on to the top of the arm and hit it with a sledge hammer. I tried this and it didn't work, I was then told cut it in 2 places with an angle grinder and repeat the bashing, I got one cut in then accidently nicked the thread with the angle grinder and got too scared and stopped that one. I bought a gear puller from sprints and that kept popping off the sides.
I was also told to get an oxy torch and heat it up on the sides to make it expand- but if you heat the steering box it warps the seals and you have to get that replaced....
I then took it to the mechanic and $45 later it was in perfect working order- he had another special puller which did the job.
Just in case other people tell you to do these things, don't bother, if it isn't coming off easily, then it isn't coming off, and probably hasn't been changed in the last 25 years.

G'day Cam, long time no see
I have just done both of these in my car (had a hard time getting an idler arm).
If you have already got the other end off then you have the hardest part done. Best bet is to use the correct puller but if you can't, a few generous hits with a hammer should shift it. Be careful not to damage the thread. I usually leave the nut half on for this reason.

There is bloody great portable hydralic bearing puller called the "Kingtool". My Dad got one from EPS Gasweld or one of those type tool shops (not Repco!).
It consists of a hydraulic jack "bolt" that is threaded and you can attach various arms or a bearing puller to it. Another attachment fits onto the centre of the bolt that allows you to centre in on the shaft of your steering box for example, attach attach the arms arounf the pitman arm, wind up the hydraulic centre section and allow the 10 tonne of pressure generated to do the work for you! This thing is so useful for steering wheel removal, all suspesion parts etc and save you damaging things trying to hit them off with a hammer. More useful than a conventional type puller. I LOVE it!

Well i went out and got a pitman arm puller after having a bit of a bash at it using the pole down thru the engine bay method.
As for using the pitman arm what a fantastic tool!! simple.
It also worked to seperate the idler arm from the steering rod.
Anthony, good to hear from you! Yeah the idler arm wasnt too bad to get, but it came with the bracket that bolts to tha chassis!! but bloody expensive at $100!! and the pitman was only $35!!
Whens the next wedding??!!
cya,
Cam
