yeah its still got the alum panels... too good to take off
i bought it for a good price.
So far i have changed wheels and have changed a whole heap of other settings.
I have recently bought
-T series rear end
-S13 rear brakes and calipers
-Brand new TRD 2 way LSD
-JIC Short stroke springs for rear
-Short stroke brand new shocks for rear
-P1 racing rims
-larger vented front brakes and caliper
that will all be going on in the next week or so. Then i have to sort out the front coil overs.. the car came with modded susp already but its not really up to my sort of standard. The front coil overs consist of stiff springs with monroe gt gas shocks.. not the best. So im converting them to short stroke too,

How good are Sprinters for drifting?
Are they quick?
How much can you do to them?

Disgruntled Celica driver (not to mention 400hp Supra driver), hes got a point, you can't really argue with what he's said. You can find far better cars for drifting. They are slow as dogs with 4A-C, and aren't the quickest thing with a 4AGE either. To make them quick and "drift" well requires lots of money to be thrown at them!

Precisely. Throw the same amount of money/mods at, say, an AE71 Corolla and it would be just as capable. You don't see many people calling AE71's great drift cars though!

thats because the KE70 is a piece of shit

yeah, u don't need much power to drift.. if u know how to do it properly. power will only make power slides more easier to pull off.
alot of japanese competitors use ae86 not because of the initial-d factor, but because of its design. its geometry and weight distribution is better than the ke71... so while doing a ke71 up with alot of mods will make the car handle better, and go alot faster, it won't necessarily mean the car will be a better drifting machine over an ae86. weight-shift control and car geometry is what it boils down to, and the ae86 is one of the more superb examples of this in its class.
AE86s RX7s S13s S15s and all those other cars that you commonly see in drift videos like option2 and best motoring are chosen for a reason - they generally allow better drifting because:
- they're FR (and FRs are generally easier to drift in)
- they've got great weight distribution, which allows for better weight shift control (RX7's have the best at 50-50)
- the distance between front and rear wheels are relatively long, which makes throwing the rear out more easier.

most drift videos i have seen they always have the turbo cars going crazy, then ofcourse for a good two minutes the ae86s are shown usualy with the commentator saying something ike 'oh here come the ae86s' and they come out looking like the clowns at a bull fighting match.

A couple of things i resent....
Norbie said AE71.... not KE70. There is a distinct difference!
and AE71's aren't a piece of crap. They are cheap alternative to an AE86, with far more room in the back seat
Quote: | Precisely. Throw the same amount of money/mods at, say, an AE71 Corolla and it would be just as capable. You don't see many people calling AE71's great drift cars though!
|
Well no you don't norbie.. .but that's cos most people are too ashamed of owning one. I'm not.
For cheap CHEAP thrills you just can't beat an AE71.

AE86's must be good drift cars, as the winnner of the 2002 D1 Championship was a AE86 sponsored by SIFT. It had a 20v Blacktop with 190hp...compared to the S15's and RX7's etc. with 350 - 450hp.

u say that an ae86 won the drift comp but it wasnt the ae86 that won, it was the driver you idiot. Put an expert in anything they can drift it. My mate messiah rated 7th best drifter in the world (go check it up i dare ya )
used to drift a stock as a rock sigma...... its skill not what kind of car there in that makes a good drifter all though this can help.
Of course this does holt at a point, id like to see anyone drift a fiat 500R
Mate if you want to drift a sprinter go for it, but as they said you'd wanna have the mullah or unless you got seriosu skills you are gonna be paddling down that creek we all know so well.

maybe the driver chose the AE86 for a particular reason?
ahhh did we stop to think about that? and that same reason is why i like them, Excellent chassis dynamics, AE86's are very few cars to be builds with a perfect wheelbase to track ratio, they handle very well, they are light and they are damn chuckable.
The wiltz: AE71 and KE70 is the same damn chassis!

I never said anything about power; I said an AE71 is just as good as an AE86 with the same level of development, since the chassis is practically identical. BOTH cars are a piece of shit in stock form.

Back onto the topic of bargain buys ... I finally gave in to my alloy addiction again after 6 months or so (much to my mates' disgust) and decided to pick up a pair of 14" deep dish Longchamp rims from Hikari ...
Dunno the condition and I hope that's not a dent in the 2nd one ... will have to wait until they arrive.
Still, when they are selling it for about 50% of the initial price they advertised it for at around the $200 mark ...

what toyota isnt a POS in stock form - thats why we mod them.
I wouldnt expect a MA61 to be any good either (in stock form) - and they look so pretentious - I think theyd be a good package but I cant past the looks, unlike the ae86 which still looks good even by todays standards.

Heh heh ... I know how you feel though ... wish there were an extra two more wheels in the deal somewhere.
Still, those P1's are amazing alloys - never seen those here in Australia in Sprinter offsets. Real rarity you have there Simon.
Let me know when you organise any skid pan day - I was out as I thought I'd be putting in the new engine into my car but a cracked crank has somewhat delayed things.
Incidentally, if anyone else is looking for a bargain, Hikari's got an AE101 20 valve motor complete with loom & Ecu for $700 plus a set of AE86 / S13 15" alloys which look like SSR Mark 1 alloys for $180:

I'd put money on a stock MA61 walking all over a stock AE86 in pretty much every department! That should come as no surprise though; the Supra was Toyota's flagship sports coupe in the early 80's, while the AE86 is a 2-door Corolla.

hehe mine walks all over your's as it is
and my susp is crap!
seriously tho.... I'd dare say that on a twisty road the stock JDM AE86 might just beat a MA61,. on the open road the i'd say the MA61 would walk all over it
that said.. they are NOT just a two door rolla
how many 2 door rolla's come factory with LSD, Disk brake rear end, vented fronts etc
oh.. a SPORTY 2 door rolla

have you been in an ma61 round the twisties? they're suprisingly impressive.
and as for looks... the ma61 definitly has that "old school" crankiness about it. flared guards, power bulge in the bonnet.
nothing compared to a mkiv, which is still one of the sexiest cars around 10 years on, but the ma61 definitly has appeal

Yeah, and to top it off, at least it doesn't look like a two-door Corolla.
Personally the styling of the AE86 does jack for me, it looks like a mid-80's car, only the Trueno front gives them any cred. The interior makes me shudder....ewww.
