I was having a look before while i was changing my coolant and noticed that there were no degree markings on the block. What there is on mine is a 'pin' that comes out from the block over the crank pulley. When i put the timing light on this i noticed that that there were two marks that were highlighted by the timeing light. One mark lined up perfectly with the 'pin' that comes out from the block, the other is about 1cm further back toward the distributor. What are these two marks for? and how do i tell if it is timed correctly?
Thanks for all your help guys
Daniel

The mark that you said the pin lines up on is the 12 degree mark for setting the base timing. The other mark (1cm towards the dizzy) is the mark for top dead centre, cylinder number 1 (zero degrees).

So in other words the first mark should line up with the pin and if i wanted to get #1 at TDC then i would line up that second mark with the pin is that about the gist of it? So basically if the first mark lines up with that pin then the timing on my engine is a-ok
Thanks again for all your help

Watch the way your motor turns over (I can say left to right or right to left dependant on where you are standing, but it'll be easier if you go and see for yourself), the pointer will approach one of the marks before the other - the first mark is 12o BTDC, with the other one following the first at TDC. So yes, you want the first passed mark to line up with the pointer. Now put the tools away, you know what happens when you try to tighten up alternator bolts, let alone time an engine?!!!
