Coilovers on RA2x Wed, 20 August 2003 07:09 Go to next message
Hi all, well i'm seriously considering changing the front shocks on the RA28 to coilovers.
I know some of this has been covered before but just wanted to run it again so i'm confident on what i'm actually purchasing/doing.

The plan is to use the original Corona XT130 struts(I put these struts in when changing to the 4 spot calipers, pug discs etc).

I plan to cut off the original lower perch(I hope thats the right name for it.. Where the spring sits anyway), and then shorten the strut by 60mm or so.

Reason for shortening is I wanted to run the AE92 corolla inserts, which have a shorter stroke which is achieved by a shorter body length and also stroke. My understanding is the body is 60mm shorter than original RA28 items. But I would confirm this before cutting!

I am thinking Koni yellow AE92 inserts.

Whiteline have a kit that comes with top cap, threaded sleeve, height adjust screw and locking screw.

Weld the threaded sleeve onto the original shock.

Put some springs on (anyone suggest what weights etc are good to go for?) and some adjustable strut tops for camber adjustment.

What does everyone think?

Also on a side note... I'd like to hear what suspension setups everyone else is running on their RAs.

Mine so far is :

Whiteline adjustable front sway bar
Pedders sports rider all round
1 inch lowered king springs all round
18mm rear non-adjustable shelby swaybar

Cheers,
Joel

Im still working on mine,
xt130 struts with std brakes lowered springs about 3/4 of an inch 25-27mm front sway bar, new bushes throughout adjustable lower control arms with modified crossmember.
Rear is basically the same minus the sway bar which i removed the other day and an adjustable panhard rod on the way.

Around $120 per side for the coilover gear.

Around $300 for each koni yellow shock insert!! Thats the killer.

I did coil-over setup for TT-132 struts and I can tell you that if you shorten your struts 60mm you will end up with way too low setup, 40mm is fine. I turned in lathe 20mm nylon spacer, its now in the bottom of the strut. AE-92 shock has 60mm shorter body and 40mm shorter stroke than *T-13* one.

I shorten mine for 40mm and use 20mm spacer too, and that's low enough. I can send you some pic if you want.

Hey Joel,
Yeh I am running quite a similar setup to you actually!
Whiteline/selby front 24mm swaybar
Whiteline/selby rear 18mm swaybar (both non-adjustable types, with Noltec bushings)
1&1/2" lowered king springs all round
KYB red shocks all round

It is quite a firm setup and gives plenty of response, but i have yet to find out what it handles like with both swaybars, as they have been added while the car is off the road, but none the less i am happy with how she handled without the two swaybars so hopefully it should improve even more..

this is quite an interesting post, id like to hear/see how well it works with the ra28 and the handling characteristics after doing such a mod..

Good luck

Guy

Hiaaa - would like to see some pics mate, thanks! sounds like 40mm in strut and 20mm spacer is the way to go for sure.

Anyone used GT4 inserts?

I'll keep everyone posted with the progress of it. Seems the hardware for the coilovers is cheap enough, but the koni yellows cost an arm and a leg.

Cheers
Joel

Hi there i changed my shockies a while back to gas inserts, but is there meant to be some kinda plug like mentioned above that goes in the bottom of the strut so the shockie sits on that, because they are a lil short and seem to rattle round in there!

When I bought gas shocks for my car, the left one had that problem too... I solved it by just putting some washers in the bottom of the strut. Smile

Re: Coilovers on RA2x Mon, 25 August 2003 04:15 Go to previous message
i got the coil over bits ($230) from ae86world.com
but u can get them from pittwater brake and clutch cheaper
the springs ($180) i just got from 1 of the local joints in taree and same with the shocks ($95)

i just went thru the parts catalouge till we found shocks that would do the job and they work well

i think it cost about $60 all up toget the old spring mount machined off and then cut 40mm shorter on the lath, and then all tig'd back up

i still got abit of tweaking to do with my setup
but it is working well Smile
