Black smoke means fuel, ie your engine is running super-rich for some reason. This would explain your power loss, and you'll probably find your plugs are nicely fouled by now as well. You'd better find out what's causing it!

White oil smoke and lots of it!!! Sometimes it also has a sickly sweet smell to it. The smoke can come from either boost or liftoff, with a quick physical check of the turbo not always showing signs of wear in the shaft.
Agree with Norbie on the BLack smoke-running rich issue too! Pull your sensors (ie idle bypass, fuel enrichment, ...) check that they aren't gummed up and seized, if they are try a good form of carbie cleaner (I only try to use CRC - they carry more active ingredient)to clean them. If you're running an AFM, this could also be the culprit, with the spring needing more tension too.

The most common cause of running rich on a turbo engine is a post-turbo air leak. Check your inlet hoses and pipes and make sure everything's securely attached.

Check for play in the shaft, both radially and axially; there should be pretty much none. Even half a millimetre of play can mean the turbo is stuffed.

classic early turbo seal failure symptom is wispy smoke on tickover after a run (eg sitting st at traffic lights).... normally takes 30sec to a couple of minutes to appear.

yeah combining both your erreatic idle and your black smoke I'd say it'd have to be a air leak...
