icon5.gif  Alarm Systems??? Wed, 20 August 2003 23:22 Go to next message
Hey guys. Just wondering where is a good place to buy a really good alarm system (preferably with keypad). Also how much would I be looking at paying for one?

Most importantly, what is a good alarm system? What brand etc?

Cheers

in terms of good alarms, rhino, brant, viper and mongoose are the ones that stand out.... i used to work for rhino alarms and they make rather good systems..in terms of a keypad though not many people integrated them into their alarms.

i have a brant alarm in ym car. Brant also makes the stock alarm systems for the WRX's so they're pretty good, and can also setup a keypad to work in conjunction with your immobilisers i believe Smile

in terms of cost you'll be looking at 600 or so up for a good system up to over 1 grand for the best..depends how much protection you want

Give Jaycar a look. They have a few shops across Sydney. Ceheck out http://www.jaycar.com.au
There is one on there with remote engine start that looks pretty sweet and its only $269 -> http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=LA899 5&CATID=6&keywords=&SPECIAL=&form= CAT&ProdCodeOnly=&Keyword1=xxxxxxxxxx& Keyword2=xxxxxxxxxx&pageNumber=&priceMin=& amp;priceMax=&SUBCATID=640
I feel that these alarms are just as good if not better than brand name alarms and the only reason for the price difference is that your paying for the brand and while some people might like to do that, its just not the way i am. Anyway, check out Jaycar and compare their stuff to brand names and see if there is much difference except in price. Strathfield Car Radios http://www.strathfield.com.au also has car alarms as does DickSmith Electronics http://www.dse.com.au but in general the Jaycar people know their shit better than the other guys.

they do sell black widow systems though which are semi decent:)

Alarms are just a matter of hooking the right wires up to the right places. Things needed, basic knowlage of electronics, wire cutters, some way of connecting the wires (screw terminals, crimping connectors or soldering. Screw terminals are generaly the eaisest way of doing it and are avaliable from Jaycar and DickSmith), a shop manual so you know which wires are which and if your hooking it up to an immobiliser you'll need to know which of the wires on the immobiliser do what. Sometimes you can get some sort of add on kit for your immobiliser to turn it into a car alarm. This kit would be the same brand as your immobiliser. If you used a different brand your would have to figure out which wires you were going to have to connect to what. Eg. there could be a relay that goes closed circuit when the alarm is triped and you would connect this to the immobiliser so that when the alarm is triped the immobiliser will be activated. If you were going to do this and ran into trouble hooking it up you could scan the wireing diagrams for the immobiliser and alarm and email them to me (sargmul@hotmail.com) and i could tell you which wires to connect together. And if you get real stuck i live in Maroubra in Sydney so you could come on over sometime and i could have a look at it for the price of a good joke or a pack of smokes if you cant tell a joke. I'm not a sparkie but i have an intrest in electronics. If you want to get someone to do it for you im sure you could find a sparkie who could pop it in and it should take less than an hour to hook up. Sometimes auto electricians will have a long cue of jobs and for a small job like this you would have to fit in with their sceduale. I'll add one more thing, im not really a fan of car alarms. i think a better setup is an immobiliser which can control power door locks so you get keyless entry and if someone does break in they cant drive the car away because of the imobiliser. those alarms are just noisey and who pays any attention to them anymore? also those little fake or not fake, flashing red lights a pretty cool as when a theif is looking to break into you car they see it, think you have an alarm and just move onto the next car as the one with the alarm is more hassle than its worth. Anyway, i hope this helps. Good luck with the alarm.

Neither. They are ultrasonic things (probably what you mean by microwave thing). The actual sensors are pretty usless as you need the alarm box thing to connect them up to and usualy the box matches the sensors and usualy when you buy an alarm with ultrasonic dector feature you get the dectors included. So the only good thing they are for is if burglars see them they might think twice before breaking in as they might think you have an alarm.

Hmmm. Ok thanks guys. Do you know if you can take your car to Jaycar or whatever, and just leave it for a day and they will install the alarm for you? I could do it myself, but it would be a lot of hassle.
