cold air feed is when you get some kind of tubing from the front of your car and guide it up to your air intake so that the air filter is no longer sucking in hot air produced by your engine
most people put some kind of aluminium shielding around the air filter to eliminate the hot air getting in as well

Dan, would it be wise to shroud the filter with some kinda material and have an intake leading to it say from the front end of the car, clear of debri or water ??

mine consists of alum sheeting surrounding the pod filter and sealing when the bonnet is closed.. cold air gets fed from around the headlight

Can someone confirm to me if this feed has to be protected form water? I mean, wouldn't water easily get sucked up the intake during rain etc?

its not a good thing but a tiny little bit of water never hurt a motor... i have an mr2 and when i rains i am garanteed to get water into the intake , as i have my filter sitting snug in one of the vents... so yup i get water my motor still is stong and no probs with starting it etc etc...

heh heh, cheap water injection when it rains
since when fuel is burnt, it produces heaps of water, a bit of water going in won't hurt anything. it's a problem if it then sits in places like carbs or throttle body, or manifold and causes corrosion, or if there is LOTS of water being sucked in.
maybe have the intake sligtly obstructd so that at highway speed, rain is not picked up thru the duct. (and not so close to the road either)

Your inlet duct would have to be completely submerged in water before water consumption became a problem. The amount of water ingested due to rain, even at highway speeds, is negligible compared to the volume of air being ingested. So don't try any river crossings, but apart from that there's no need to worry!

Used to clean the carbon off the valves of a 2.6 liter capri by pouring a glass of cold water down the carb with the motor running. just go to full throttle while pouring the water in to the carb.
