The cost of a scratch Thu, 21 August 2003 10:05 Go to next message
Last week i scratched a rear bumper of a Toyota Echo while parallel parking. It was a small scratch with no dents - just a BIT of paint came off...my car received the larger scratch on the left door...anyway, just my luck that the owner of the Echo saw it. So i end up paying for it and the lady says the cheapest she found was $418 (incl. GST). I'm like WTH!!! I complained to the staff at the smash repairs but she insisted that it was fair, saying something like the labour of removing the bumper+other thinga-majigs & spraying the entire bumper...

What do you guys think? Do you think it can be called a Rip-Off? I haven't much of a clue...from my uneducated guess, it shouldnt cost more than $100.

if it was a metallic coloured car - then yes - its gunna cost more - they have to blend the metallics in to make iot look right

Our falcon ( silver metallic )) was sent back 3 times to a grand cost of 1500 dollars for a minor dent - because the paint wasnt done correctly .. they had to remove EVERYTHING off the back of the car - paint the boot , bumper , quarter panels - just to make it match

Learn your lesson - be careful in carparks - and dont be a prude and leave the scene!

if that was my car and you tried to skulk away without leaving a note or details id want to hurt you and charge you for it aswell

a car is a car, just coz its a lesser car (in your opinion) its stil damaging someone elses property coz your unskilled in parking.

as said before, learn to park and take is as a lesson to be more careful

2 wheelie bins outside your place and 30 mins practise should fix you up good.

I was asking my mate who is a cop about this sometime ago..

What happens if someone runs into you on private property. It does change things around.. I'll have to get him to refresh my memory but you can charge them with malicious damage or something along those lines.

Thats if they wont hand over the money of course..

If I ever see someone even knock my car with theirs and try to get away with it.... watch out! pricks that do that should be shot, damage something, pay for it!

I got an old corona mkII, just a run around to leave at the train station each day, and its had 3 seperate run ins now and not 1 of those people have left their details! bastards! shows you how little people care these days about other peoples property.

That quote sounds about right, they have to blend etc. My GF ran into the back of someone only at about 15 - 20km/h and it caused $3500 worth of damage!

Cheers
Joel

I ground up the side of a bmw a week after I got my p's (3.5 years ago now) fully wrecked a panel and then the rest.

Cost $1200 to fix and I didn't have to pay a cent cause of insurance. $1200's a bargain if you ask me Smile

It can depend on the damage you do underneath th plastic as well. I had someone ding the back of my car, and although the plastic bumper popped out again (and the paint fell off Rolling Eyes )
it was also bent undeneath on the brackets. It cost the person who hit me about $350 to get it resprayed and repaired. Anytime the panels come off it's going to be money. Plus the car was prob brand new - and who wants their new car to be anything less than perfect.

Beyond that, I'd had my car tidyied up at the same time (not total respray just some other scratch repair) and two weeks later some f**kwit in a carpark had scraped the front of it. No note, no nothing and I was furious. It annoys me to see the "lets try and get away with it" mentality some people display. Mad Mad

Still, there's nothing worse than hitting a pole or something stationary in your own car - no-one else to blame and you just are so mad at yourself!!

Well, allow me to have a whinge. I saw the scratch - it was like only small bit of paint that came off! (Located at the round-ish edge of the bumper, near the rear wheels)
I am actually quite an honest and charitable person but my dad is on the dole and I'm a uni student who gets minimum wage so i pay for everything. Money doesn't come easy for me.

Depends if your insured or not...panel beaters always charge $$$ if they know its an insurance job. around 400 is fair...see if u can get a pic of the damage and take it to your local shop & they should be able to give you an estimate

Thats my 2 cents

If it was a good scratch then the bumper will need spraying... Echos are metallic paint (usually) so I'd say around $300 to spray... And it's not that hard to remove four bolts to take the bumper off...

to be honest,
$400 sounds about right.

I work park time at a panel beater.
If it's a new car, people would want it to be perfect.

People seem to think that a small scratch the size of a 50 cent piece is nothing. But in all honesty, you have to spray the entire bumper or else it will still be visible.

you gotta remove and prep the bumper (sanding it down). heat and bend the 'pushed in' bit. prep the area so it's smooth and level, and then paint X amount of paint layers.

$100 bux isn't going to get you far in terms of repairs at a panel beater.
not to be harsh, but you just gotta be careful..
i've hard MANY parking lot scrapes in my time Smile

rock on.

benny boy you know as well as i do there is about six bolts holdoing it on(hehe) but i just touched an accord 97' 98' model there around and that was 800 buck i learn from my mistakes. thats why i can park semi trailers with ease yet can't manouver a box trailer for the life of me. a bit off the topicbut oh well.

by the way letmedrift sound close to right but panelbeaters quote more if you say its not an insurance quote. but too bad that you did it i hope it dont happen again for your sake.
