Spark plug question Fri, 22 August 2003 09:17 Go to next message
Hey all

Went to see if the corona had the right plugs in there and no it doesnt.....

it needs BPR5EY-11 plugs i think
and its got BP5EY in there

besides the wrong gap .... the "R" stands for resistor

seeing as though the ones in there dont have them im just wondering if this does any damage to anything in the ignition system by any chance ?

from my limited knowledge of electronics a resistor slows down current flow.....so if theres no resistor when there should be it could be burning things out in the ignition system ?

or do i have it all wrong ?

Thanx
Mani

doesnt hurt at all
it takes a way different size plug to damage an engine unless its a turbo engine

i think r mainly stops radio interference and static
im not to sure
u can use bp5ey and open gap abit if u want
u shoul dalways check gap anyway when fittin new plugs

The resistor in the plug is used for EFI motors to stop electrical noise interferering with the ECU , A larger gap plug will usualy make your motor idle smoother and run better on low loads .

and also a larger gap will be more likely to have the spark blow out at high rpm/WOT if the coil is not up to the job.. had that happen Wink

fwiw, for the same motors where the spec changed from non-resistor to resistor plugs, the gaps also went from the 0.8mm standard, to 1.1mm with the resistor plugs, check www.ngkspark.com.au for details...

you can use BP5EY or BP5ES, or BPRetc with no probs and probably little difference in performance.

i have points dizzy with jaycar HEI and get big sparks,

but if i go above 1.0mm gap, it is worse at both idle and WOT, less than 1.0 is good for idle, but bad for WOT....
