fuel additives?

a friend told me that the increased fuel consumption i'm noticing in my 97 starlet is probably due to dirty injectors, and that makes sense, because we've looked at everything else it could be...
because getting them properly cleaned is pretty expensive, a few people have suggested i get a petrol injector cleaner fuel additive (eg the nulon or wynns ones)
what's the deal with these fuel additives? do they actually work or will they destroy my engine?
if they cost $100, i'd wager that they DO work, but for $10 a bottle.... i don't know... any clues?

i used a nullon one once and i did notice a difference definetely
just make sure u add the right amount to your tank and try and run your tank as dry as possible b4 filling up again
i just put a wynns one in my bike today actually and we'll see how that goes
btw the nullon ones are double the price of the wynns ones from memory.....but when i bought the nullon one ages ago it was on special
oh and i should probably mention that both vehicles that ive tested/testing are both carby
however that shouldnt matter as its obviously still cleaning something out hence it should clean your injectors out too
and seriously for $10 a bottle give it a go .... its $10 u tightass

I use spitfire injector cleaner sometimes and I notice the difference , but nothing beats the bath I give them at work , they come out looking bloody new.

FWIW,
The WA RAC magazine gave the Nulon additive a rave review a few months back. They normally diss any "miracle-cure in a bottle additives", so I'm inclined to think it might be worth a shot.
cheers,
Justin

as far as performance goes, i will give it a rave review, too...
i'm half way into the treated tank of petrol and the engine needs noticeably less petrol for certain inclines around canberra... i'm very happy with this so far
