Crossmember/Chassis spacers Sun, 24 August 2003 09:56 Go to next message
Anyone used spacers between the crossmember and chassis rails before?
Any problems doing this?

Thanks

Yep, though I haven't driven the car yet.
The Sprinter had to get some for the big 3SGE gen four engine to fit under the bonnet. They're only about 10mm thick so not that big.
The main thing (I expect) to notice is that the front roll centre will be a little higher than what it was before, so I may have to go to 45mm thick RCA's instead of the 30mm ones I have now.
With a slightly higher front roll centre the car will understeer a little more.

Thanks Bill. 10 - 15mm spacers would be perfect for what I want to do! I'm also looking at getting some large spacers made to sort out the roll center problem. Do you know if the RCA's from a sprinter would fit a TA22? If they do i'll get a pair of the 45mm items with you Very Happy

Umm... I'm confused: if your roll centre is *higher* than before with these xmemember spacers, and you were going to use RCAs (i assume to compensate lowered for springs), it seems to me you would have to use shorter RCA blocks, not higher ones.

Where am I going wrong? Is it because the lowering the xmember also mucks about with the control arm mounts? Also, I thought a higher roll centre was desirable, putting it closer to the front centre of gravity and decreasing front body roll.

Putting a 10mm spacer between the crossmember and the chassis is like lowering the car 10mm!

maybe if the crossmember bolts to the top of the chassis rails??? sounds like it is raising the car body off the crossmember, but since the ride height comes from the struts, it will only affect geometry, not ride height....? how will it lower the car??

I didnt mean it was lowering the car Rolling Eyes I meant that like lowering the car it will make the control arms go higher than standard! Which means you will need RCA's to bring them back down!
All clear?

Bugger!
I made a mistake - It'll LOWER the front roll centre, not raise it.
The effect of that is to make the car understeer a little more on corner entry and oversteer on the exit.
RCA's lift up the front roll centre to get it back to where it should be, in relation to the rear one to keep the handling good.

That's what I meant. If whatever you did lowered the roll centre more, you need bigger RCAs... if it raised the roll centre more, you need smaller ones.

Wow, what I said was actually right. Shit.

(I'm waiting on some 30mm RCA blocks from a celicasupra group buy, hoping it will reduce front body roll and improve the handling further)
