Making a low fuel warning light for a old car Mon, 25 August 2003 04:56 Go to next message
just been playing behind the dash yet again! just got myself thinking is there anyway to make a warning light for when ya car gets low on juice! how do they work on newer cars?. Im guessing that when some sort of resistance is met on the fuel guage the light is flicked on,

any ideas would be great, im sure there would be hundreds of people that would be interested in making one

Yup i did this on my 23 Jaycar have a kit it actually works on the resistance in the fuel guage system and not on the capactience bulb thingy that is on most newer cars these days.

that soundslike a great idea!! what is the range of resistance of a fuel sender anyway?
if you have a surge tank, you could put one in there with a "warning massive damage" light Smile)

i have seen kits around that have a vertical thing that has an internal float that is used for boats and planes and such for fuel levels. might be a bit extreme having a second sender in the tank tho.

Jason, do you have, or can get, an article number for that kit? latest jaycar cat doesn't have it listed?

i heard spark plugs make great sensors for this !!

Just drill and tap one into your fuel tank at the desired level, and apply high voltage.

I garentee you will know when the fuel gets low.

really?
the same way that increasing valve lash increases power?
and 18" rims make a car faster?
and Neons make your car faster cos it pushes it off the ground? (light speed!!)
and quad throttles on a stock motor will double your power?

wow, maybe you could use heat range 12 plugs for the level sensor, since they are so cold.... Cool

edit:

or maybe you could just have a bucket in the passenger seat so you can easily see when you are low??

but seriously, can't be that hard to use the original sender, depending on the resistance of the gauge, the sender and the light circuit...

At least with the spark plug method, something WILL light up when the fuel gets down Evil or Very Mad even if it IS the night sky..
