Puff of smoke Mon, 25 August 2003 05:26 Go to next message
Ok, this is the third time I've noticed it now over a period of probably 6 months. But today and the last time are about a month apart.

I start the car first thing in the morning, and I see a cloud of smoke drift off behind the car.

It looks blue-ish, which means it's oil I think.

It's just one initial puff, then no more blue smoke. I always let my car warm up properly before driving off too.

I checked the exhaust after the initial puff and there's faint white smoke just puffing out. (Condensation I think). But after the car is fully warmed it's fine. I can then drive easy or hard all day and the exhaust is clear.

Should I worry, or is it something that just happens?

sounds possibly like valve stem seals, happens to my 1G-GE all the time, it usually is only a small amount of oil, I have never had to top up the oil between services.

my car puffs some blue smoke on startup, and it drained the oil down to the low mark twice, the second time I was noticing more and was about a week. Didn't see a spot of oil in the engine bay tho. Topped it up again and it has been steady, hoping its not going to be a big problem Confused

Yeah, seems to be a 1G trait. All 3 of my 1Gs did it. Although the current one stopped doing it after a while...

I've seen it on other 1Gs too.

Engine is a 5sfe. Wink

What would it be though? More oil than usual getting into the top of the pistons and burning on startup?

Seems Rob is right. It does look like it's the valve stem seals. Time to start saving..... At least I can do the timing belt at the same time too.
