Am trying to undo the top nut and the whole tube just turns... Tried using vicegrips to hold it with no luck.

use a stilton (stilson?) wrench or two, like the kind plumbers use on pipes, a vice might be a good idea.too.

I just thought of this...
theoretically you could attach it back up down the bottom and leave it inserted through its holes up the top (that is reassemble the strut in the car just loosely to stop it from turning) and then loosen the strut nut, and then take it all off down the bottom and up the top, remove the strut, and then finish the nut off since it will be loose ... that only works in certain situations though, but it might work for yours
But I think your problem is that the spring and all turns yeah? heck, you you doing the back or front? my theory only works on the back. I think on the front, the spring etc will want to spin too...

Im doing the fronts whihc are a coilover with aftermarket pillowbal tops, Trying to undo the nut but the whole shock tube just turns as well. I tried using vice grips on the tube but i cant get a good enough grip. dont really care about stuffing the shock up as they are stuffed anyway

This post is probably going to make no sense but here goes...
When I did mine, the strut top fitted onto the strut in a way that they are locked together, its like the strut top where the strut goes in was a D shape and not a 0 shape. So if you can hold the strut top in place then the strut itself cannot turn.
So I put the strut top in the vice which is easy to hold in place and then undid the nut...
Might work for you..
Cheers

If no vice, you could always put it back in the car.. At least the top 3 bolts back up in the shock tower so it can't move.
Or you away from car too?

I had to put one of mine back in the car to do it, as I didn't have tools to do it otherwise...

Yeah that's what I did as well... I loosened it while it was in the car. The weight of the car on the strut prevented it from turning too easily.

The problem is that his strut tops are running spherical bearings not the normal strut tops where they lock the shaft from spinning. The shaft is circular all the way up out of the bearing with this setup.
On my rears there is a allen head drive in the top of the shaft but the front has nothing. What I did for the front ones is to get a 3" or so length of garden hose, split it lenghtways and then wrap this around the shaft. Then I got a set of vice grips and locked them down as hard as possible on hose around the strut shaft and undid the nut. Of course some penetrating lubricant would be handy and you'll probably find that using this method to tighten the strut after you install the new ones will not get rid of all of the rattles.

1)can you grind flats onto the shock rod with an angle grinder or dremel?? then lock the V-grips onto that, .... or get some vice grips with really sharp teeth so it digs in..
2)if you can securely compress the springs (like with 4 compressors) why not cut the whole shock rod off!!! then clamp it in a vice.... a little destructive, but there's not much an angle grinder can't fix
option 1 always works for me....
