I want to get rid of the engine fan on my car and replace it with twin thermos(which is another topic all together).
I have seen a ford with chrome pulleys with a big thick arse belt can you change pulleys around whats involved?
They are like the pulleys on supercharged V8s.
it looked sick maaaaaaate
the belt width was about this:

Why would you want to change pulleys?

haha!
i know exactly what you mean.... the belt is so wide that they actually give you that whirring noise as well
Can't give you any info on it unfortunately.... if you get thermo's though you won't need that belt anymore (just a thought)
thermo's make for less friction... therefore more horsies!

Are you talking about gilmer(sp?) drive? Definitely not the sort of thing you'd get just because it looks "sick".

Of course he will need the belt - what will turn the altenator, water pump and any other accessories?
Yes you can change pulleys, but for your 4M, they will be custom. You will need to take note of the diameters so you dont overspeed the accessories, the machinist will need to index the crank pulley so you can still check the timing, and you need to check that a belt is available in the size you are after. It sounds like a lot of headache to me.

So a metal machinst can do it?
Can the pulley on the engine be changed without pulling the hole thing apart?
So how much power would you gain from going to thermos?
(i dont expect much but..)

It obviously can't be a lot if BMW decided to stick with a conventional fan on its hipo N/A M3 engine.

mmmm Gilmer drive
often used with superchargers because they are non-slip, like timing belts. they are pricey, wear quicker (cos of the teeth), but they do sound like you have 6/71 hiding under there
they are available for rotaries as well as the ford/holden crowd, but for the expense of three pulleys plus belt?
the stock V or ribbed belt will be fine, especially with fan removal as the fan probably used most power out of the fan, water pump or alt.
but if you want the fooly sik sound it would be very shiny!

CM2, yep a machinist can do it. Just remember each rib on the outer edge of the pulley is a machining manoeuvre and each one of those costs a bit of money. Many ribs equals many bits of money.

CAPA have the pulleys from that pic.. to go with the Vortech SC.. but $$$
you do get a bit more out of an engine when you take off the fan, but i guess is more noticable on smaller capacity, or bigger fan.....
instaed of thermos, what about a clutched or viscous fan coupling? reduces speed and power loss at high revs....
