Hi angain everyone hope you can shed some light on this.
So 8.3:1 comp is good for a turbo but will i need to change the injection set up to turbo this motor cause i belive its only single point injection. Apart from forged pistons and exhaust manny, what else will in need to change e.g bearings etc
Any help much appreicated

18R-GEU injection is multi-point, however the injectors are pretty small so they should be replaced with larger units if your goal is more than 200hp. You will also need an ECU capable of running a turbocharged engine (ie not the factory ECU).

Forged pistons are nice but optional below 250hp. You won't have to touch the bottom end at all unless you're aiming for insane power.

For a budget setup, all you really need is the following:
- suitably sized turbo (eg MR2 CT26, series 5 RX7)
- custom exhaust manifold
- larger injectors (ideally 300cc or so)
- programmable fuel-only ECU (eg Microtech)
- intercooler
- custom inlet piping
- 3" exhaust system off the turbo
- EFI fuel pump, fuel lines etc.

I think that covers the major stuff. That should get you to the 250hp mark without much trouble, with stacks of mid-range torque and a screaming top end.

What injectors would be good how big is to big cc wise and is it hard to fit them. Auto spark could do the ecu no probs?

3tgteu injectors would be ideal for 200hp and fit the same as original 18rg. If you are chasing the 250hp as norbie states you will need at least 350+ cc injectors, mazda famila injectors may be a good option. If using them with the standard comput just make sure the impendnce is matched. The 18rgeu uses ballast resistor and low impednce injectors. The 3tgteu injectors are high impedence therfore the balast resistors should be removed.

When you buy the injectors you should measure the restance to know what you are getting anyway. Low impednce ~2ohms high impedence ~12 ohms.

How big is two big cc wise will depend on your computer ability if using the standard computer you will want to use the smallest you can get away with for the horsepower you are aiming for. Two big will cause you idle problems. I would say 500cc would be the absoule limit for the standard computer and that would take some serious tuning and drivability/idle would be average.

OK I have been thinking about this for a while and willl probably go on with it in about 6 months time.. if all goes according to tplan.. but anyway

Has anyone ever done the 3TG-teu injector swap into 18R-geu fuel rail? using standard computer?
Is it as simple as it sounds for removing the ballast resistor?? Does this completely raise impedance to correct level for the 3T injectors?

Is it more difficult to match the impedance of other injectors such as 1G, 3S-ge/te, familia, SR20t, 13Bt... ??
or if you are going to go BIG u may as well get aftermarket computer too?


If you were to run a low-boost application(180hp/4-5 psi) using the standard computer would the 3T-Gte injectors run it adequately?

Also,
i have heard the 18RG/eu has a dodgy oil pump from factory, would this be an issue if applying boost to a motor like this? Would it be sensible to upgrade to a larger/better oil pump?
AND what is involved with getting oil to and from the turbo?? I know you have to drill holes in the block so i want to be quite certain before starting! would an oil cooler be smart? then fittings/lines could be used for turbo and oilcooler?

would a crown/cressi/supra M oilpump be better??

- 3T-GTEU injectors will do the job, but don't expect great results with the factory ECU.

- The oil pump is fine, but you may want to shim it for higher pressure. This is a fairly common mod.

- You don't need to drill any holes in the block. You can get a high-pressure oil feed from the same place as the oil light sender (just put a T-piece in there), and the return line goes back to the sump. Make sure the return line is large (about 1"), straight and flows as close to vertical as possible; the oil coming out of the turbo will be frothy and won't flow well.

- An oil cooler is a good idea, but this should be run inline with the oil filter. You can get kits to do this.
