Is this a good price for an 18RGU?

18RGU twin cam twin 45mm webbers (just reconditioned), extractors, 2.5 inch exhaust reconditioned head ported and polished, complete running gear, thermo fan to tailshaft. They're asking $2400 for the lot, is this too much? What would be an ok price for all this? Keep in mind this is in Adelaide, so things are a bit more expensive here, as there isn't so much about. Also, would this engine be very streetable, or would it be idling at 1500RPM, and guzzling fuel like a V8?
Thanks for the help,
Tim

Well I bought mine from WA for about $350 I think (can't really remeber). Mine is in a pretty bad state, It will cost me about $1000 to get recoed (not including the carbs). It didn't come with an exhaust manifold or any of that other stuff.
So I guess that's not too pricy for the engine and all the rest if it's in extremly good running order. By the time mine is up and running I would have spent $2000 easy on it.

The absolute maximum I'd pay for an 18R-G is $1k, and it would have to be a minter to pay that much.
$2400 is a joke when you can get a 1G-GTE half cut for less than that!

But if I got a 1G-GTE half cut...that wouldnt include custom engine mounts, tailshaft, etc etc and actually getting it running, coz carby is a little easier then injected turbo to get up and running.

try and haggle
$2400 is way too much for the lot, explain to them that theres not that much interest in 18R-G's anymore and that the 1G is so popular.
getting the price down to $1500 - 1800 would be the limit, also depending on what gearbox it comes with and how good a condition it is in, same as condition of tailshaft and other bits they thow in.

Thanks guys, does anyone know what approximate hp figures this engine would be putting out with the mods listed above?
Thanks,
Tim

Impossible to say without more information. Probably somewhere between 130 and 180hp.

I've been told similar to a Holden strait 6 engine when worked. I'm not sure what that is though. The 18R-G's were made for rallying so they go hard from what I can tell.

i have recently upgraded to an 18RG, and i can tell ya its a massive improvement to the stocker motor,
im very impressed!!
its pretty standard, with some TRD headers and a 2inch exhaust!
if you can find one that hasnt had the ring revved out of it, its well worth doing...
$2400 is a hell of a lot more than id be willing to pay... considering that i bought a whole car with an 18RG for 500 bucks!.
having said that, if the motor has all the work done to it that you say it has, the guy has prolly paid 2400 with all the work done to it, thinking its now worth that much... but... it aint.
as jason said, if your keen on an 18RG that hussles, theres a dude that has an 18RG running NOS for 2500 i think it was..
and that motor has a whole lot more done to it than a port and polish...

if you are interested in that nos engine, act like a complete celica nut and he'll lower the price some more. He said he'd sell it to me for under 2g.

Thanks guys, but I don't want anything too over the top, or I won't be able to insure it! This is just gonna be my daily drive car, so an engine with NOS, and plenty of other mods isn't exactly what I'm looking for. I would like an 18RG, just to get a bit of hustle out of my celica.
Thanks,
Tim
