Hey Ppls,
As the topic says... Im about to buy some extractors for my ae86 and im wondering what is the difference between the two sorts?
Is the 4-2-1 design worth another $40? Is there any performace gains?

I doubt that a 4-2-1 offers much performance gain over a 4-1 -> what it'd offer you is better driveability around town.
The 4-1 set is meant for high RPM's - you'll find that your car might be doughy in the lower RPM's if you go with these.

yup, exactly.
4-1 needs high gas velocity to get it working efficiently, and also works in a narrower rev range.
4-2-1 works from medium to high gas velocities, and can have a much broader range of rpm.
it really depends on how it is tuned by the length on each pipe (for pulse reflection) and diameter (for velocity). both need to be right to get the most out of it.
aren't 4AGE stock manifold good already?? i keep hearing rumours that there is little benefit to be gained by going to extractors?
anyone?

i got werd from the guy who installed my exhaust that buying a new exhaust manifold was expensive and not worth the little gain.
he mentioned a 2 percent increase in power.
which is not worth 400 bucks for new genie extractors he was quoting.

I'm quite sure necro's is putting the 4age into his RWD Sprinter, and needing some RWD 4age exhaust manifold... so he is getting extractors... not sure if the FWD exhaust manifold is fine for a RWD AE86 4age application

i think that the reference to stock exhaust manifolds was inferring them being in a RWD config.

No, the stock FWD manifold won't work for a RWD setup, as it directs the exhaust under the engine...
In my case, we had a set of 4-2-1 headers made up and a full 2.5" system fabricated. Whilst, on the face of it, people may think this a little big for an NA 1600, when the restriction of the cat, plus muffler and resonator, is taken into account, it actually works out quite well.

I have run both the stock AE86 4ag extractors and a set of Stewart Wilkins motorsport 4-2-1 extractors and I would say they are much of a much-ness.
Factroy for torque (little more in the bottom end) and the extractors for the higher rpm power (revs cleaner up top).
I think the bottom line will dictate your choice as you will gain nor lose much either way.

For the 250 i paid for the extrtactors I cannot complain.
