1G-GTE Valve Stem Seals Wed, 27 August 2003 03:37 Go to next message
Anybody replaced these before. Can you get to them without taking the head off?

It doesn't concerne me too much but if it just required removing the cams and valve springs, it's not too much on an ask. I don't fancy taking the head off though.

um ... to remove valves & springs you gotta pull the head off ... valve-spring compressor has to press on head of valve (currently out of sight) as well as springs retainer.

I made a tool up to change the seals on my 3SGTE without removing the head ,Also make up a air adaptor to screw into the plug hole and sit the piston at TDC on the one your working , Took a couple of hours making the tool but was still quicker and cheaper than removing the head .

My thinking exactly trevor.

Some seals are put in on the collar side of the valve and some on the valve side. If they are on the collar side, I can change them without removing the head. You just need to take the spring off and make sure the valve don't drop into the cylinder.

If they go in from the bottom, I have to remove the head regardless. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

tho - if the stem seals are stuffed, then it's possible (or perhaps likely?) that the valve guides, or seats, or even stems are also worn - would be a PITA if after all that work using the neato tool that you gotta pull the head anyway?

Tho i gotta admit that pulling the head wastes a box of gaskets - so if you're going to do brain surgery, you may as well fix every other head problem you've been trying to ignore...

Other than a little puf of smoke on start up my engine is good. I can cope with that but if it can be fixed without disturbing everything I don't mind spending a day on it.
