Bought a fresh set of tyres on the weekend. Good way to lose a grand...

Anyway, I find them really crap. Not much grip at all compared to the all tyres which were down to the radials...

I've driven about 700km on them. Is there a certain period when all the crud goes off the surface of the tyres?
Or did I buy shit tyres?

Tyres in question are:
Front: Falken ZE-326 (215/40R17)
Rear: Toyo Trampio (235/45R17)

[Edit: For comparison, the old tyres were Goodyear Eagle F1s front and Pirelli P6000s rear]

700 km, they should be broken in after 50! do a burn out and see what happens to he rears after that, or alternatively do a buirnout and try and return them to the store!! Laughing

remember that new tyres have taller rubber 'blocks'. the talle rthe blocks are, the more movement they have, and is why new tyres, even of the same kind, feel squirmy, and not as grippy... they aren't!

they will get better as they wear down, but it'll always feel a bit weird until they wear down a bit...

or it could be the tyres.. the F1's and P6000's ar pretty sticky aren't they?

Not really helping you out, but is there a reason you got different brands of tyres front and rear? I can understand the different sizes. Did they not both come in what you wanted?

All new tyres have an inhibitor sprayed on them from the productoion factory, this aids the tyre while it sits in storage and is the tacky feeling and some of the smell new tyres have. I've always been very "GENTLE" with new tyres for the first 500 - 800Km to wear off the inhibitor, and also feel the way the tyre reacts. Agreed, they won't feel like your old ones based on tread depth, but also having run both F1's and P6000's, and my general knowledge of Toyo and Falken tyres, I'd say they won't be as good. Also check the treadwear numbers, the lower the number, the softer the rubber.

I didn't have enough time on Saturday to do my tyre shopping and by the time Sunday came around, there was only one store open. Sad
I was down to the radial so I didn't want to risk driving back to Canberra on those tyres.

And that was all they had to choose from. The rears are grippy now. The fronts just suck though.

That sux. I can live with a loose rear, but a loose front just gives me no confidence when I push. Sad

Thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll just have to live with it until I kill this set (especially the fronts).

[Edit: Just realised that I made a mistake. I've only gone about 400km with these tyres.]
