Yes you could do it. It would require custom fabrication of a crossmember to go across from one side of the sub frame to the other. It would bolt up to where the steering box and the idler arm mount. You would then bolt the rack to that.
A series of questions then arise. Which rack? How do I connect it to the std Mk2 steering column? Where do I place the rack such that I do not increase bump steer? What about Ackerman angles?
Another question emerges - why exactly do I need to spend an exorbitant amount of money just so I have a bit more clearance around my extractors? If you are concerned about heat, then use heat wrap or get them ceramic coated.

If you actually want more direct steering, then perhaps it is worth it, IF it is done properly.

You could possibly use a Sigma steering box - it will drop down on the other side of the subframe. Will it make a difference? Yes, it could make your steering and handling woeful by increasing bump steer (if done incorrectly).
Could your steering box be recoed? Yes it can.

This is one of the few 'pay someone' jobs that can be done. I sure as hell wouldn't try it myself.

That said.. if you get it done, let me know how it turns out Wink

You may possibly have to work out a clever way of joining the column to the box. I don't know because I haven't really looked into it in any great detail.

subframe? what the?

Our Mk2s have a subframe. The engine and suspension bolt up to this. This subframe bolts up to the body. It's the big black thing under the front half of the car!

Correct. The steering angles have been very carefully worked out by some poor Japanese engineer 30 years ago. Just whacking a rack or differnt box in there without due consideration of these angles could result in terrible steering and handling.

If your steering is sloppy and you have used all the adjustment, then recoing it will result in an improvement. However, I would check the usual suspects like worn tie rod ends and ball joints.

I actually use the steering box. I fitted new tie rod ends and ball joints. I have ceramic coated the extractors to keep the heat down, and run a power steering fluid cooler.

ahh the black thing i thought it was the cross member (dont flame me Embarassed )

I'll be getting all of the suspension done which inclues the ball joints and tie rod etc.

I had a power steering cooler (original one) it looked ill and leaked so it aint got one now.

thanks for the advice
