a newbie strut question Thu, 28 August 2003 18:22 Go to next message
hi all. i just picked up a 79 corolla for 150$ (canadian). got it from the original owner who has receipts back to the day he bought it. he sold it because the drivers side front strut assembly blew out. he was just pulling out of his drive so the damage was minimal. what happened is the bell-shaped bottom spring support welded to the mount (through which the shock goes) rusted out. the spring unloaded and the front of the car dropped. i thought these must go often because the bottom spring support must catch the water than rust out. finding parts here for this car is really tough. do you guys have some kind of mod or replacement from a different year that's more common that i could stuff back in place of the original? i appreciate any suggestions. thanks! stu mitchell.

Most of us here are in Australian a that model is relitivly common. Most japanese wreckers yards has parts availale quite cheaply.

This is the first time I've heard of that happening, but it could be a problem there due to the cold weather every year. Do they salt the roads in your area during winter?

Best bet would be do a quick searh of the forums for that partiular model as it is quite common here. Other wise try a local wreckers yard.

Craig.
