using alum as caliper bracket

Am using a piece of 12mm thick alum to fabricate a new brake caliper bracket.
before i get too carried away, will this hold up to the task or not? its a bloody thick piece of alum!
the caliper mounting holes are also closer together and further in then the OEM ones.. so there is less chance of stress the further out from the centre hole i go.
any thoughts?

i think you are allowed to, as long as you helicoil the tapped holes.
do you have much of a choive where to put the mounting holes?
ask dbasteve, although i expect you have already.

I am using a large chunk of aluminium as a caliper bracket. For it to be engineered, it needs to be 6061T6 aluminium (ask to see the certificate and get a photocopy if possible) and any bolts that actually thread into the aluminium MUST be helicoiled.

well im not sure what type of alum it is. None of the bolts are acctually threading into the alum either.. i have just drilled holes for them to pass through.

I used CNC's alloy caliper brackets for my brembos onto 330mm rotors. We helicoiled all the threads and haven't had any problems on the street or track. This is pulling up a barge arse GT4 as well

Well im not CNCing it but rather using a jigsaw, angle grinder and a drill... crude but it will work

it really depends on the alloy. strength of aluminium can vary by an order of magnitude (10x) just by composition and heat treatment... normal alloy sheet is not good enough, as GT said, it should be at least a 6 series alloy, with a T6 heat treatment... or if ya wanna be special, a 7 series...
but all alooy shoul;d be heat treated properly, otherwise it is no better than some random piece of materil you pick up....
better to be safe than sorry....
