What is it with pursuit rims?

Seems like every second Commadore and a few Falcons have pursuit rims. I really don't see the attraction to them, imho they look like your hubcap covers have fallen off So why do people get them? I've heard that apparently they give you better braking or something cause of improved airflow

"Proper" pursuit rims are wider than standard-issue steelies. It basically means you can fit larger tyres on your bogan machine without having to fork out for alloys. Sik!!

Yeah they're called interceptor rims in Vic. I think they were originally on the VL Turbos and cop spec BT1 (pursuit vehicals). They are 15" over the standard 80's commodore 14". For the VL turbos it was necissary to fit these wheels 'cos the brakes were bigger and it gave a lower profile for handling.
If you look under the hubcaps on any commodore and ford since the late 80's you'll find interceptor rims. I think it's just that bogans drive cars that are so rooted that all four hubcaps are missing. Also, they retail for about $20 bucks a rim 'cos lots of people chuck 'em when they get mags on they're new car.
PS: I used to have a VK Berlina and VL Calais but I am well and truly converted to Toyota now. I have seen the light.

Most cars these days have black painted rims when they have hub caps.
If I looked under the hubbys of a bombo or falcie, would they be black or silver?
Or do they somehow strip the black paint off?
Sometimes you see them with a chrome ring.

intercepters are in most terms differant to stock steelies that come with the cars these days
they have the center cap, and are better for cooling, if you actaully look at them side by side they are differant from the normal ones with hubcaps over them....
also you can get any width you want, like 10inch wide, so its good for a high powerd vl commo that wants to look stock, but still kinda get some traction....
not that i know anything about commodores or anything...

Billy-Mason PI, New cars usually come with black interceptors so you don't notice them through the hubcaps. If people are going to sell them they usually paint em silver so they look "less" boganish.
I have seen one guy with chrome ones and I said to my bro who was with me "what a freakin' tool". For what he would have spent getting them chromed, he'd almost be able to buy a cheap set of mags.
When I had my Calais, the alloys that came with it (non standard) had the wrong offset and hit the guards when my friend's fat girlfriend was in the back. I bought some interceptors that some guy was selling that he'd just had painted silver. The paint lasted 3 weeks before it started flaking off and you could see the original black underneath. I was pisssed off!

Ah ... I remember the good old days when Auscar tri spoke rims were in fashion and almost every car I saw on the road had them, from Bimmers to Suzuki's to Fords and Holdens ...
What has the world come to?

As I explained at the top of the thread, the common black steelies found on base-model Falcadores are NOT the same as pursuit/interceptor rims.

A dude in my Tafe class has a VL with them... Except he's sprayed them white... Doesn't look half bad...
Better than silver anywayz...
You can see his dodgyness though... The valves are white aswell ... Although, he managed not to get any of the tyres...

Norbie, you are exactly right The standard steelies and interceptors are not identical. They look the same apart, but together, do not. Please accept my appologies for doubting your word.
