Removing over worn drums Sat, 30 August 2003 06:36 Go to next message
Just picked up a complete diff to replace the one under my RA28,
I started to pull it apart to replace bearings, fluids check the condition of the centre etc, but the previous owner has obviously driven the rear drum pads down to metal and further and I can't get the drum off.
Can anyone tell me how to release the pads so I can get the drum off??

Cheers

this is obvious but i ask...is the hand brake off ?

if so.....the use of a hammer

dont hit it on the round side though as yourll f**k up the drum
hit it on the flat side facing u
just give it a decent hit with a hammer on adjacent sides
then if u can get a flatblade inbetween the drum and try and lever the thing out

lemme know if this helps

The car is in wagga wagga and the diff is in windsor...
I don't think the handbrake cable is that long Very Happy

I'll Give that a go all thou I've already had my favorite tool
taken off me for hammering at 2am this morning.

I do have a spare set of drums so wrecking these ones won't worry me... does this mean I can hit it harder?? Razz

if u dont care about the drums then yeah wack em hard...

but still dont whack them on the round bit
hit them on the flat side
hit it on opposite sides like i said to see if it will wiggle out

then try and lever it out with a beefy flatblade

drums are shit

on an average car with disc brakes all round....the rears only do 20% of the braking
so with drums as they arent very efficient and adjustment isnt that great its probably less

If they are worn that much there may be a lip in the rear edge catching the shoe and preventing it's removal. try adjusting the shoes in, it may help.
