Heyo,
Has anyone shortend a shifter in an AE92 themselves...? How low did you go? Any probz since doing it ?
Can you actually buy a shortend shifter for a AE92? I've seen them for AE101's but not eariler...
I want to do it, but I cant find any mates with a Tap & Die Set...
So if there's anyone around the Central Coast / Newie Ares That has one and wants to give a fella rolla driver a hand please lemme know....

Yep ive done that mod on my ae92 Levin, i only cut about 40mm off mine, and it took a while as the steel used for the shifter is very hard. Ive also unbolted the complete shifter mechanisim ans raised it 80mm to get the shifter where i wanted it
i know you can by short shifters for ae92s in the US but thats no good for a RHD vehicle as it bends away from the driving position .... maybe try TRD japan ?!

What did you use to cut it ?
i was thinking oxy torch and then put a new thread on it, cool, around 40mm sounds pretty much how far i want it dropped btw i'm 6"1 so easier to reach instead of bending my arm
I Thnk TRD Shifters would be good but $$$$

Yeah TRD is big thats why i cut mine i cut mine with a dremel tool , but id say if you had the time you could cut it with a hacksaw i guess you could torch it but make sure you cut the thread first ,as its quite hard to restart a thread of that diameter and with that grade of steel, and if you can use a dremel you wont need to take the shifter outta the car.... which may not seem relevant, but remember how much force it takes to cut the thread and you cant get it to hold in a vice to well if i could work out how to post a photo i could show you what ive done

G'day, just thought I'd say how much a difference lengthening* your shifter makes to your gear changes. Shortening is good, but you should combine that with a shorter throw while you row.
If you are just going to shorten the shifter only then here's a note on cutting that tough steel. Grab a good (or new)hacksaw blade plus a helpful, albeit game, friend with a strong grip to hold your shifter while you hack. Should only take a minute or so. Make sure you wrap an old sheet or towel around it to catch the filings. If you don't give a rats about quality or are waiting for a tap/die kit, whack a Supercheap Auto gearknob on it which is fastened on with 3 allen key bolts.
*the shifter is lengthened below the pivot point.
Rather than explain something you may already be aware of, feel free to check this short shifter mod site for an ST185.

My 77 celica had a real long shifter, it stuck op real high near the dash. When I went to cut it I realised I couldn't as the celica shifter gets thicker near the bottom so I couldn't cut any more off, so I just cut it in 2 places, taking out about 2"-3" and also taking out the fat bit, and welded it back together. much eaiser than a tap-and-die, I used a metal dropsaw to cut mine.
