Does anybody have any ideas for a engine swap for a 1985 hilux 4X2. I preferably want to drop a twin cam in, in place of the 3y
has anybody got any ideas? I also want to lower it, where can I get it done (perth). I have three weeks befor it goes back on the road and would like to sort something out before then.
ther must be someone out there that has modified a hilux 4X2?

I know you can fit a hilux engine into a Gemini with little work.
You can also put into an gemi: piazza turbo, 13b turbo, and 308 v8 amongst others...with little to no effort.
My powers of deduction say that any of these should then work into a hilux, but I am no means an expert, so check it out first.

slap a 308 in it or a turbo six, you want some power to hall the hilux around - you will pay big dollars for a turbo engine conversion, what about a later model hilux turbo diesil engine?

yeah, I was looking at putting a toyota engine in, I have an 18rgu and 5speed in the shed but wondering about engine mount changes and crossmember changes, I was also wondering about a twin cam 1600 out of a corolla or celica there is not much available in the west and it is all pricey. as a toyota purist I cant see a gemini motor in a toyota, thought of a v6 commodore motor but again price is a factor

1GGTE, 3VZ, 1JZ...arr... mm.. 1UZ... 2RZ.. well where can do stop? Any of the toyota model RWD engine will fit, with little work, I wouldn't even look at the 18RG when you have a look at the prices of a 1GGTE, which will eat a holden for dinning...

i dont know what differences there would be between the YN** and RN** hilux crossmemebers, but checking out a similar model RN** hilux and its x-member might be worth a look.
I had thoughts of chucking my spare 18R-G into a mates old RN30(?) hilux which had an 18rc.... but passed on it after he was going to sell it.

all hilux's after '85 share very similar chassis, in fact all have very minor. The x-members all sit in the same position ie rear sum on the engines. All the engine mounts are located in the same position and same goes with the g/box x-member

Thanks for the info Keep it up. The 1ggte fits then. can you tell me roughly what major changes you had to do ie x member changes and engine mounts. This lux is plated 12/84 but was not released until 85.Tried telling insurance that it was an 84 sr5 auto and they told me it cant be anyway the 3y and auto has to go. I FEEL THE NEED FOR SPEED

dave,
I've managed to scan the article and winzip it to a reasonable size, so I'll email it to you.... any one else wanna copy too? By the way I was wrong, hilux's have a front sump, but it's been a while since I've worked on one.
