encoders VS crank angle sensors

I was having a think yesterday, would it be at all possible to retrofit an encoder to an engine in place of a crank angle sensor??
An encoder would be a shitload more accurate compared to a crank angle sensor. Your computer would know exactly where the crank was down to fractions of a degree if you wanted. surely thats a good thing??

An encoder is a device which is driven. It outputs 1, 10, 100, even 360 or 720 pulses per revolution. An encoder that outputs 2880 pulses per revolution means it would be accurate to 1/8th of a degree.
The only problem is making the ECU understand this signal.
Thought someone here might be able to tell me if it is at all possible.......
