OK, both the KE35, & KE55’s look pretty similar externally (apart from the headlights & stuff. Does anyone know if they are the same mechanically??
Does the suspension & driveline stuff swap between the two?

Between the 2 cars, almost everything swaps over. The early KE30, KE36 and KE35 in Australia, it pretty much 100% imported from Japan. From about 1977, Australian content started to creap in. The KE35 from 1977-78 had a BorgWarner diff. The KE35 in 1978 had BorgWarner diff, newer dash design, PBR brake master cylinder and booster. All KE35, 30, 36 models had the 3K motor. The KE55E (sedan), KE55S (hardtop) and KE38 (wagon) came in late 1978. They all had the 4K motor, new style dash, different grill and hood, plastic caps on the bumpers etc. And loaded with Australian made stuff, like the borgWarner diff, Holden Automatic, Bosch distributor, Bosch alternator, Australian made seats, 3 spoke steering wheel. The very last of the KE55 was about 1981 or 1982 (too late, the TE72 already came out in 1979!), so Toyota Australia gave it a minor makeover to sell some more. Like square headlights, different bumpers, anti-roll bar upgrade (front and rear), different mirrors, different grill, int wipper control.
So yeah, it all swaps over. The only real difference is the BorgWarner diff in the newer ones. If you swap the diff, make sure you get the matching tailshaft to suit. The other main difference is between the 3K and 4K motors.

Okay, in NZ we never got the KE55, but the later model KE35s look and seem to have similar mechanicals to AUS KE55s.
Differences I've noted:
1976 KE35 had black dash. <78 = different floorpan <78 = different pedal box, easier for hydraulic convert <78 = different dash and grille, looks better IMHO, less 1980ish
thats all i can think of right now....dunno bout diffs, prolly all NZ stuff would be jap spec too.
