for some reason i have people whispering in my ear that sprinters are unreliable?
what is the deal? is it just because they are older cars and they need to be in good nick or are they just unreliable?
ive also heard the computer on them can be a pain in the arse?
so what is the deal? let me know what you think
cheers

i think they are pretty reliable for an old car, since its simple design i believe when something goes wrong you can easily find the problem, i have a 4age 16v in mine never had a mechanical failure at all nothing has gone wrong for a long time. My friend had a 4ac which was overheating all the time manage to drive for ages with that engine before he chucked in a 4age, i believe the 4A block is built tough.

4A series is very robust and reliable...
do the people who are whispering in your ears have any credentials?

i think they are whispering out their arses ( blowing hot air )
Sprinters have a very similar makup to the early RWD celicas - which are very reliable if maintained normally.
Im yet to hear of a high maintanance " sedate " ae86 - or major mechanical dramas with em ..
From everything ive read , seen , and heard from sprinter owners - they are a very reliable little car - if kept maintained

"you silly silly man, you can not hurt a twinky"
the same goes for sprinters with 4AC's, my first car was also my first sprinter when i turned 17, i knew SFA about cars and "maintenence" and it just wouldnt die, in 3 years it only had 2 oil changes, and went through 1 set of brake pads, and a battery!! and i think the car is still driving around newcastle somewhere. The moral of this story is there is not enough power in a 4ac to create stress on any of the parts, and i did delivery driving in it for 3 years, so it was pushed hard...
Just dont rally them

4ac's are tough. the car i learned to drive in (ae82) had a 4ac and a really hard life. had a blown head gasket when we bought it. i drove it to school every day flogging the hell out of it, never changed oil, eventually the oil light came on and i just kept flogging it, i had the valves bouncing on numerous times while doing burnouts. one day it overheated so i took the thermostat out and flogged it some more. had it for a couple of years then my brother had it, then his friend had it. all the time with a blown head gasket what a champion motor.

Take one 4-AC AE86, drive carefully for 140000Kms, hand over to maniac (namely me ) thrash the tits off it for 20000Kms until 4AG is ready to go in, decide to destroy 4-AC "just for fun" so we can have an excuse to get the G in faster, take said vehicle to dirt patch and practice S/flicks in 1st gear @5KRPM, engine wont die , better idea, chock front wheels and do burnout in dirt to hit max rpm and hopefully blow engine....
max rpm hit at 7200Rpm for about 1 min, engine still runs and actually improves????? not including now leaking front main seal, takes 2 mins to rock AE86 out of wheel ruts to head back home
answer... old 4AC's never die... they just get better the more you thrash them
seriously.... you have to really mistreat a 4-ac to kill it and apart from rust, the AE86 is a fairly good shell if it hasnt suffered any prangs.
