Thinking about supercharging Thu, 04 September 2003 02:50 Go to next message
I'm very interested on power upgrades for my "88 celica, the problem is that it has a 3s-fe (not that it's a bad thing) now i've thought about turbos, engine swaps but now i'm thinking along the lines of supercharging because it's most likely to be cheaper than the other options. And much different from any other celicas in my area.
I don't know much about superchargers, so I need to now what i'll need in order to accomplish this project, such as type of charger? Fuel management? hosing? etc?
Any help would be great? websites?

Supercharging definitely isn't the cheapest option available to you. If you want forced induction, a 3S-GTE swap is the most cost-effective way to go.

Thanks, it's just that the engine swap will cost about $2200 for the 3s-gte, then add add another 2 or 3 grand for everything else, it'll be too big for my budget, from what i heard you can pick up superchargers for about $350 then a Microtech LC8 (i think) pretty cheap, all up about $2000, and i also heard that superchargers are less maintanance than turbos, but it may be bullsh#t. I you think any different please tell me.
I'd also like to apologise on my other thread (Upgrades) i bit of miscommunication, i meant that i wasn't going to solve other peoples problems with my typing, "cos that's how i type, but i'm trying.
Cheers

are you taking into account the labour involved in mounting the s/c'er and for the plumbing , tuneing ,how much do you expect the computer to be ???

as i am also putting a s/c'er onto a motor out of an 88 celica may be a bit more info for ya here about what could be involved

Engine swaps are expensive, but with the amount of labour and custom fab work involved in a SC install, it will end up costing you more. Sure you can pick up SC14's pretty cheap, but that's only a small component of the overall cost.

Phrozen_Death: Yeah i've thought about that, and i've got friends that would help out on that, and another mate works at a tuning shop.
I'm guessing the LC8 would cost about $500 'cos it's a pretty simple computer for fuel management.

That picture looks sweet
Thanks, how you finding your project? working well?

Norbie: Well what else would be involved?

Off the top of my head:
- custom mounting bracket for SC
- engine pulley
- tensioner pulley
- intercooler
- inlet piping
- bigger injectors/fuel pump
- upgraded management and tuning.

The last one is the real killer as far as price goes. And don't forget you'll only be able to run low boost in this application unless you want to open up the engine and lower the compression ratio - then we're talking BIG dollars.

I stand by my call that a 3S-GTE swap is more cost-effective.

yep i agree with norbie in the long run the 3sgte will be alot less than modifying the one you have with a s/c, the reason I'm doing it is more of a because i can and I'm not to worried about what it may cost as long as i get it going in the end, but it still comes down to what you still want to do but the cheapest way out would be the 3sgte

On the note of 3sgte swaps... hehe

What's the thought on hooking one up to a 3sge tranny? or is that a totally stupid idea? Very Happy

Yeah, the idea of a 3s-gte is sounding more appealing now, i been thinking over the weekend about it, now i've got to do more thinking on whether i want to do the swap.
Thanks for the help guys, you put up a pretty convincing argument
