What's involved in a tune up?

Hey. I am thinking of getting my car a tune up. I have recently had the timing belt replaced so i know the timing is right, and I religiously do oil filter changes and put new oil in, as well as checking brake fluid and radiator water level. What little things can I do to have her running smoother or performing better.
Thanks

with modern EFI cars nowadays theres no real need for the old style 'tune up' this was mostly getting carbies back in tune
some options for you are to get the injectors cleaned,
replace the air filter, and fuel filter (fuel filter should be done regularly with oil)
also make sure none of the vacume lines on the engine are blocked with gunk.

Yep, it's all just basic maintenance with modern engines, there's really nothing to "tune" as such. Of course that doesn't stop mechanics charging a couple of hundred bucks for a "tune-up" when all they do is change the oil and plugs.

what about the carby engines then? i've got the 18RG so its twin-carby. I've only ever had my mechanic service it, he only charges me $80 but if i can do it myself itll save me the cash to spend on the car instead. Is it easy to learn and do? can anyone explain or do u have to be shown how?

Tuning twin sidedraughts is an art form and it can't be easily learned (not if you want to do a decent job anyway). I doubt your mechanic is doing much with the carbs for $80 though; more likely he's setting the ignition timing, adjusting the points gap and checking the plugs. All of this can (and should) be learned by any car owner. Get yourself a workshop manual and go nuts!
